शुष्कैणैकेन वृक्षेण वनं पुष्पितपादपम् ।

कुलं चारित्रहीनेन पुरुषेणेव दह्यते ॥ ४११

Shushkainekena vrukshena vanam pushpitapadapam ।

Kulam charitrahinena purusheneva dahyate ॥

Just as one dry tree burns a forest full of flower laden trees,

a characterless person will be the downfall of his family.

दया मूलो भवेद्धर्मो दया प्राण्यनुकम्पनम् ।

दयायास्तु परीक्षार्थं गुणाः शेषाः प्रकीर्तिताः ॥ ४१२

Dayamulo bhaveddharmo daya pranyanukampanam ।

Dayayastu parikshartham gunah sheshah prakititah ॥

Compassion is the root of dharma. Empathy with living beings is compassion.

Compassion is the standard to judge other qualities that one has.

यां चिन्तयामि सततं मयि सा विरक्ता
साप्यन्यमिच्छति जनं स जनोऽन्यसक्त:।
अस्मत्कृते च परिशुष्यति काचिदन्या
धिक्ताञ्च तं च मदनं च इमां च मां च ॥ ४१३

Yam chintayami satatam mayi sa virakta

Sapyanyamicchati janam sa jano anyasaktah ।

Asmatkrute cha parishushyati kachidanya

Dhiktancha tam cha madanam cha imam cha mam cha ॥

The lady of whom I am constantly thinking, has no love towards me. She loves another person and he is interested in another woman. Some other lady is longing for me. Fie on her, him, the Cupid, that lady and me too

पङ्कैर्विना सरो भाति सदः खलजनैर्विना ।
कटुवर्णर्विना काव्यं मानसं विषयैर्विना ॥ ४१४

Pankairvina saro bhati sadah khalajanairvina ।

Katuvarnavina kavyam manasam vishayairvina ॥

A lake without clay, a meeting without fools and wicked persons, an epic

without harsh words and a mind without worldly pleasures shine well in the world.

त्यजेत् क्षुधार्ता जननी स्वपुत्रम् खादेत् क्षुधार्ता भुजगी स्वमण्डम् ।

बुभिक्षितः किं न करोति पापं क्षीणा जना निष्करूणा भवन्ति ॥ ४१५

Tyajet kshudharta Janani svaputram khadet kshudharta bhujagi svamandam ।

Bubhikshitah kim na karoti papam kshina jana nishkaruna bhavanti ॥

A starving mother will leave her own son, a starving snake will its own eggs.

What sins will not commit a starving being, weak persons become merciless.
