 अमितगुणोSपि पदार्थो दोषेणैकेन निन्दितो भवति

निखिलरसायनमहितो गन्धेनोग्रेण लशुन इव 816

 

Amitagunopi padartho doshenaikena nindito bhavati
Nikhilarasayanmahito gandhenogrena lashuna iva

 

Even with many qualities, a substance gets defamed if it has a single defect in it.

Garlic with its medicinal properties is defamed for its pungent smell.

 

मृत्योः बिभेषि किं बाल न स भीतं विमुञ्चति ।

अद्य वा अब्दशतान्ते वा मृत्युर्वै प्राणिनां ध्रुवः ॥ 817

 

Mrutyoh bibheti kim bala, na sa bhitam vimunchati

Adya va abdashatante va mrutyrvai paninam dhruvah

Why are you afraid of death, young man? It will not spare one who is scared.

Today or after a hundred years, death is certain for living beings.

 

यौवनं धनसम्पत्तिः प्रभुत्वम् अविवेकता
एकैकमपि अनर्थाय किं यत्र चतुष्ठयम् 818

 

Yauvanam dhanasampattih prabhutvam avivekata
Ekaikamapi anarthaya kim yatra chatushthayam

 

Youth, money, position of power and thoughtlessness – each

can cause havoc. What can be said when all the four converge!

 

उदेति सविता ताम्रस्ताम्र एवास्तमेति च ।

सम्पतौ च विपतौ च महतामेकरूपता ॥ 819

 

Udeti savita tamrastamra evastameti cha

Sampatau cha vipatau mahatamekarupata

 

The Sun is red at the time of rising and red at the time of setting.

Great people remain the same at the time of happiness or distress.

 

उग्रत्वं च मृदुत्वं च समयं वीक्ष्य संश्रयेत्
अन्धकारमसंहृत्य नोग्रो भवति भास्कर: 820

 

Ugratvam cha mrudutvam cha samayam veekshya samshrayet

Andhakaramasamhrutya nogro bhavati bhaskarah


Act harshly or gently depending on the situation (time).

Even the Sun does not shine harshly till darkness is removed.

 न कर्माणामनारम्भानैष्कर्म्यं पुरुषोश्नुते ।

न च संन्यसनादेव सिद्धिं समाधिगच्छति ॥ 811

 

Na karmanamanarambhanaishkarmyam purushoshnute

Na cha samnyasanadeva siddhim samadhigachchati

 

By merely giving up all activities of the world a person

does not become a Sanyasi or attain liberation (Moksha)

 

नास्ति बुद्धिरयुक्तस्य न चायुक्तस्य भावना 

न चाभावयतः शान्तिरशान्तस्य कुतः सुखम्  812

 

Nasti buddhirayuktasya na chayuktasya bhavana

Na chabhavayatah shantirashantayasya kutah sukham

 

For one who is not tranquil, there is no knowledge. For one who is

not tranquil there is no contemplation, and for one who is not contemplative,

there is no peace. For one who has no peace, how can there be happiness?

 

पादाहतं यदुत्थाय मूर्धानमधिरोहति

स्वस्थादेवापमानेऽपि देहिनस्तद् वरं रजः 813

 

Padahatam yaduthaya murdhamadhirohati

Svasthadevapamane api dehinastad varam rajah

 

 

Dust when kicked with the foot rises up and climbs to the head.

It is better than the person who remains fine even on being humiliated.”

 

विनयफलं शुश्रूषा गुरुशुश्रूषा फलं श्रुतं ज्ञानम् ।

ज्ञानस्य फलं विरतिः विरतिफलं चाश्रवनिरोधः ॥ 814

 

Vinayaphalam shushrusha gurushushrusha phalam shrutam jnanam

Jnanasya phalam viratih viratiphalam chashravanirodhah

 

Result of courteousness is service, result of service to a teacher is knowledge,

Result of knowledge is detachment, result of detachment is salvation.

 

 

द्विविधो जायते व्याधिः शरीरो मानसस्त्तथा ।

परस्परं तयोर्जन्म निर्द्वन्द्वं नोपलभ्यते ॥ 815

 

Dvividho jayate vyadhih shariro manasastatha

Parasparam tayorjanma nirdvandvam nopalabhyate

 

There are two kinds of diseases, physical and mental.

They are interdependent. Neither exists independently.

 वस्त्रेण वपुषा वाचा विद्याया विनयेन च ।

वकारैः पञ्चभिर्युक्तः नरो भवति पूजितः ॥ 806

 

Vastrena vapusha vacha vidyaya vinayena cha

Vakaraih panchabhiryuktah naro bhavati pujitah

 

Good dress sense, good physique, good speech, education, courteousness are the five qualities that will earn a person respect in society.

 

आपूर्यमाणमचलप्रतिष्ठं समुद्रमापः प्रविशन्ति यद्वत् ।

तद्वत्कामा यं प्रविशन्ति सर्वे स शान्तिमाप्नोति न कामकामी 807

Apuryamanamachalapratishtham samudramapah pravishanti yadvat

Tadvatkama yam pravishanti sarve sa shantimapnoti na kamakami

 

Ocean remains calm though innumerable streams merge into it. One who

remains calm like an ocean attains peace, not the one who is full of desires.

 

सन्तोषस्त्रिषु कर्तव्यः स्वदारे भोजने धने ।

त्रिषु चैव न कर्तव्योऽध्ययने जपदानयोः ॥ 808

 

Santoshastrishu kartavyah svadare bhojane dhane

Trishu chaiva na kartavyo adhyayane japadanayoh

 

One’s duty is to be satisfied with these three – one’s wife, food and money

One should never be satisfied with these three – learning, penance and charity.

 

शुद्धैर्धनैर्विवर्धन्ते सतामपि न सम्पदः ।

न हि स्वच्छाम्बुभिः पूर्णाः कदाचिदपि सिन्धवः ॥ 809

 

Shuddhairdhanairvivardhante satamapi na sampadah

Na hi svacchambubhih purnah kadachidapi sindhavah

 

The wealth of even the virtuous does not grow with pure money,

nor do rivers get filled up with pure waters.

 

पूरयेदन्नेनार्धं तृतीयमुदकेन नु

वायोस्सञ्चारणार्थाय चतुर्थमवशेषयेत् 810

 

Purayedannenardham truteeyamudakena nu
Vayossancharanarthaya chaturthamavasheshayet


Eat food only to half stomach full. Third quarter of stomach should be

filled with water and the balance should be left empty for circulation of air.

 मृगा मृगैः संगमनुव्रजन्ति गावश्चगोभिस्तुरगास्तुरंगैः ।

मूर्खाश्च मूर्खैः सुधियः सुधीभिः समानशीलव्यसनेषु सख्यम् ॥ 801

 

Mruga mrugaih sangamanuvrajanti gavashchagobhisturagasturangaih

Murkhashcha murkhaih sudhiya sudhibhih samanashilavyasaneshu sakhyam

 

Deer enjoy company of other deer, cows of other cows, horses of other horses,

fools of other fools, intelligent ones of other intelligent ones, beings of equal 

qualities always get along well.

 

 

शुभाशुभाभ्यां मार्गाभ्यां वहन्ती वासनासरित् ।

पौरुषेण प्रयत्नेन योजनीया शुभे पथि ॥ 802

 

Shubhashubhabhyam margabhyam vahanti vasanasarit

Paurushena prayatnena yojaniya shubhe pathi

 

The impressions (Vasana) of prior births flowing in a river of two streams, good

and evil, should be turned into one stream, the good one, by human effort.


अशनं मे वसनं मे जाया मे बन्धुवर्गो मे ।

इति मे मे कुर्वाणं कालवृको हन्ति पुरुषाजम् ॥ 803

 

Ashanam me vasanam me jaya me bandhuvargo me

Iti me me kurvanam kalavruko hanti purushajam

 

Food is mine, house is mine, wife is mine, relations are mine, One who

keeps saying mine, mine (May, May) is killed by the wolf of time like a goat.

 

सर्पः क्रूरः खलः क्रूरः सर्पात् क्रूरतरः खलः ।

मन्त्रौषधिवशः सर्पः खलः केन निवार्यते ॥ 804

 

Sarapah krurah khalah krurah sarpat kruratarah khalah

Mantraushadhivashah sarpah khalah kena nivaryate

 

A snake is cruel, a wicked man is cruel, the wicked man is crueler than the snake.

A snake bite can be controlled by chants and herbs, who can control a wicked man?

 

प्रकृते: क्रियमाणानि गुणै: कर्माणि सर्वश: |

अहङ्कारविमूढात्मा कर्ताहमिति मन्यते ॥ 805

 

Prakruteh kriyamanani gunaih karmani sarvashah

Ahankaravimuddhatma kartahamiti manyate

 

All activities happen because of actions and qualities of nature.

The arrogant unknowing soul thinks he is the cause.
