एकस्य कर्म संवीक्ष्य करोत्यन्योऽपि गर्हितम् ।

गतानुगतिको लोको न लोकः परमार्थिकः ॥ ६६६

Ekasya karma samvikshya karotyanyo api garhitam ।

Gatanugatiko loko na lokah paramarthikah ॥

Observing someone’s wrong actions, others do similar acts. In this world of

imitating others, no one seems to imitate someone doing philanthropic acts.

सदयं हृदयं यस्य भाषितं सत्यभूषितम् ।

कायं परहितं यस्य कलिस्तस्य करोति किम् ॥ ६६७

Sadayam hrudayam yasya bhashitam satyabhushitam ।

Kayam parahitam yasya kalistasya karoti kim ॥

Heart filled with compassion, speech adorned with truth,

Body devoted to others’ good, what can Kali do to such a person?

मर्यादानां नृपो मूलमापगानां यथा नगः ।

अनाचारे स्थिते तस्मिन् लोकस्तत्र प्रवर्तते ॥ ६६८

Maryadanam nrupo mulamapaganam yatha nagah ।

Anachare sthite tasmin lokastatra pravartate ॥

A king is the source of morality just as a mountain is the source of rivers.

If he engages in unrighteous acts, his subjects will do the same.

हर्तुर्न गोचरं याति दत्ता भवति विस्तृता ।

कल्पान्तेऽपि न या नश्येत् किमन्यद्विद्यया विना ॥ ६६९

Harturna gocharam yati datta bhavati vistruta ।

Kalpante api nay a nashyet kimanyadvidyaya vina ॥

Not visible to thieves, becomes larger if given away, does not get

destroyed at the end of Kalpa, what else can it be other than knowledge?

ऋषीणां च नदीनां च कुलानां च महात्मनाम् ।

प्रभवो नाधिगन्तव्यः स्त्रीणां दुश्चरितस्य च ॥ ६७०

Rushinam cha nadinam cha kulanam cha mahatmanam ।

Prabhavo nadhigantavyah strinam dushcharitasya cha ॥

The source of Saints, rivers, lineage of great persons

as well as wicked women should not be probed.

विकृतिं नैव गच्छन्ति सङ्गदोषेण साधवः ।

आवेष्टितं महासर्पैश्चन्दनं न विषायते ॥ ६६१

Vikrutim naiva gachchanti sangadoshena sadhavah ।

Aveshtitam mahasarpairshchandanam na vishayate ॥

The virtuous do not get affected by the company of the wicked. Sandalwood

tree does not become poisonous in spite of being surrounded by snakes.

कुर्वन्नपि व्यलीकानि यः प्रियः स प्रिय एव सः ।

अशेषदोषदुष्टोऽपि कायः कस्य न वल्लभः ॥ ६६२

Kurvannapi vyalikani yah priyah sa Priya eva sah |

Asheshadoshadushto api kayah kasya na vallabhah ||

Even having done unpleasant things, a loved one remains a loved one.

Even with a lot of defects, who does not love one’s own body?

आशाया ये दासास्ते दासाः सर्वलोकस्य ।

आशा येषां दासी तेषां दासायते लोकः ॥ ६६३

ashaya ye dasaste dasah sarvalokasya ।

asha yesham dasI tesham dasayate lokah ॥

People who are servants of desires are servants of the whole world.

For those to whom desire is a servant, the whole world is a servant.

शमार्थं सर्वशास्त्राणि विहितानि मनीषिभिः ।

स एव सर्वशास्त्रज्ञः यस्य शान्तं मनस्सदा ॥ ६६४

Shamartham sarvashastrajnah vihitani manishibhih ।

Sa eva sarvashastrajnah yasya shantam manassada ॥

All scriptures preach that peace should be the goal of all people.

One whose mind is always peaceful is considered a pandit of all scriptures.

क्व सूर्यप्रभवो वंशः क्व चाल्पविषया मतिः ।

तितीर्षुर्दुस्तरं मोहदुडुपेनास्मि सागरम् ॥ ६६५

Kva suryaprabhavo vamshah kva chalpavishaya matih |

Titirshurdustaram mohadudupenasmi sagaram ||

How great the Sun-influenced race, how small my mind with such little knowledge. I am foolishly desirous of crossing the difficult to cross ocean.

एवं पूर्वैर्गतो मार्गः पितृपैतामहो ध्रुवः ।

तमापन्नः कथं शोचेद्यस्य नास्ति व्यतिक्रमः ॥ ६५६

Evam purvagato margah pitrupaitamaho dhruvah ।

Tamapannah katham shochedyasya nasti vyatikramah ॥

This is the journey of life already performed by

our fathers and grandfathers. When one joins the

journey, which knows no change, how can one complain?

वयसः पतमानस्य स्रोतसो वाऽनिवर्तिनः ।

आत्मा सुखे नियोक्तव्यस्सुखभाजः प्रजाः स्मृताः ॥ ६५७

Vayasah patamanasya srotaso va anivartinah ।

Atma sukhe niyoktavyassukhabhajah prajah smrutah ॥

Like the flow of water which can never return to its source, aged cannot become younger.A man must continue to engage himself in righteous acts that bring him happiness, it is said.

वर्णयन्ति नराभासान् वाणीं लब्ध्वापि ये जनाः । 

लब्ध्वापि कामधेनुं ते लाङ्गले विनियुञ्जते ॥ ६५८

Varnayanti narabhasan vanim labdhvapi ye janah ।

Labdhvapi kamadhenum te langale viniyujjate ॥

People who have the gift of speech use it to describe doings of evil people.

And when they are gifted Kamadhenu, they yoke it to a plow to farm.

कोकिलानां स्वरो रूपं लज्जा रूपं कुलस्त्रियः ।

विद्यायाः पटुता रूपं रूपं मूर्खस्य मौनता ॥ ६५९

Kokilanam svaro rupam lajja rupam kulastriayah ।

Vidyayah patuta rupam rupam murkhasya maunata ॥

Voice is the grace of nightingales, modesty is the grace of noble women,

Knowledge is the grace of the learned, silence is the grace of an idiot.

विनश्यन्ति समस्तानि व्रतानि विनयं विना ।

सरोरुहाणि तिष्ठन्ति सलिलेन विना कुतः ॥ ६६०

Vinashyanti samastani vratani vinayam vina ।

Saroruhani tishtanti salilena vina kutah ॥

All vows get destroyed without humility.

How can a lotus in a lake stay erect without water?

माता गुरुतरा भूमेः खात्त् पितोच्चरस्तथा ।

मनः शीघ्रतरं वाताच्चिन्ता बहुतरी तृणात् ॥ ६५१

Mata gurutara bhumeh khat pitoccharastatha ।

Manah shighrataram vatacchinta bahutari truant ॥

Mother is weightier than earth, father is higher than the sky.

Mind is faster than wind, worry is lighter than straw.

स हि भवति दरिद्रो यस्य तृष्णा विशाला ।

मनसि च परितुष्टे कोर्थवान् को दरिद्राः ॥ ६५२

Sa hi bhavati daridro yasya trushna vishala ।

Manasi cha paritushte korthavan ko daridrah ॥

He is the poor one whose desires are limitless

When one is mentally satisfied, who is wealthy, who is poor?

जानामि धर्मं न च मे प्रवृत्ति: जानाम्यधर्मं न च मे निवृत्ति:  ।

केनापि देवेन हृदि स्थितेन यथा नियुक्तोऽस्मि तथा करोमि ॥ ६५३

Janami dharmam na cha me pravruttih janamyadharmam na cha me nivruttih ।

Kenapi deven hrudi stithena yatha niyukto asmi tatha karomi ॥

I know what is dharma yet I cannot get myself to follow it. I know what is adharma yet I cannot refrain from it. It is as if some force dwells in my heart and impels me to do what I do.

वाक्सायका वदनानिष्पतन्ति यैराहतः शोचति रात्र्यहानि ।

परस्य नामर्मसु ये पतन्ति तान्पण्डितो नावसृजेत्परेषु ॥ ६५४

Vaksayaka vadananishpatanti yairahatah shochati ratryahani ।

Parasya namarmasu ye patanti tanpandito navasrujetpareshu ॥

Barbed words emerge from the mouth, if they are aflame they cause commotion.Such words reaching others will offend them, wisemen never shoot barbs at others.

श्रवणायापि बहुभिर्यो न लभ्यः शृण्वन्तोऽपि बहवो यं न विद्युः।
आश्चर्यो वक्ता कुशलोऽस्य लब्धाश्चर्यो ज्ञाता कुशलानुशिष्टः ॥ ६५५

Shravanayapi bahubhiryo na labhyah shrunvato api bahavo na vidyuh ।

Ashcharyo vakta kushalo asya labdhashcharyo jnata kushalanushishtah ॥

Not possible to find many who have heard him, the many who have heard him remain unaware, it is a wonder to find someone who can speak about him and one who knows him (God)

पयःपानं भुजङ्गानां केवलं विषवर्धनम् ।

उपदेशो हि मूर्खाणां प्रकोपाय न शान्तये ॥ ६४१

Payah panam bhujanganam hevalam vishavardhanam ।

Upadesho hi murkhanam prakopaya na shantaye ॥

Feeding milk to snakes will only increase their poison.

Advising fools will only lead to more anger not peace.

आयुःप्रश्ने दीर्घमायु र्वाच्यं मौहूर्तिकैर्जनैः ।

जीवन्तो बहुमन्यन्ते  मृताः प्रक्ष्यन्ति कं पुनः ॥ ६४२

Ayuh prashne deerghamayurvachyam mauhurtikaijanaih ।

Jeevanto bahumanyante mrutah prakshyanti kam punah ॥

When it is the question of longevity, astrologers should predict long life.

Those who are alive will appreciate it, how will the dead raise any question?

केनामृतमिदं सृष्टं मित्रमित्यक्षरद्वयम् ।

आपदां च परित्राणं शोकसन्तापभेषजम् ॥ ६४३

Kenamrutamidam srushtam mitramityaksharadvayam ।

Apadam cha paritranam shokasantapabheshajam ॥

Who has created this nectar of two syllables MITRA(friend)?

Which gives protection in danger and acts as a medicine when in sorrow.

ना गुणी गुणिनां वेत्ति गुणी गुणीषु मत्सरी ।

गुणी च गुणरागी च विरलः सरलो जनः ॥ ६४४

Na guni guninam vetti guni gunishu matsari ।

Guni cha gunaragi cha viralah saralo janah ॥

Those without talent do not recognize talented people, those who are

talented are jealous of other talented people, those who are talented

and love other talented people are indeed rare.

गणयन्ति न ये सूर्यं वृष्टिं शीतं च कर्षकाः ।

यतन्ते सस्यलाभाय तैः साकं हि वसामि अह्म् ॥ ६४५

Ganayanti na ye suryam vrushtim shitam cha karshakah ।

Yatante sasyalabhaya taih sakam hi vasami aham ॥

Farmers do not mind the heat, rain or cold and strive

to grow plants for food. I (God) am always with them.

क्रोधः प्राणहरः शत्रुः क्रोधो मित्रमुखी रिपुः ।

क्रोधो हि असिर्महातीक्ष्णः सर्वं क्रोधोपकर्षति ॥ ६४६

Krodhah pranaharah shatru krodho mitramukhee ripuh ।

Krodho hi asirmahatikshnah sarvam krodhopakarshati ॥

Anger is a life taking enemy, anger is a friendly faced rival.

Anger is very sharp like a sword, anger brings dishonour to everything.

जयन्ति ते सुकृतिनो रससिद्धाः कवीश्वराः ।

नास्ति येषां यशः काये जरामरणजं भयम् ॥ ६४७

Jayanti te sukrutino rasasiddhah kavishvarah ।

Nasti yesham yashah kaye jaramaranajam bhayam ॥

Winners are those well versed in fine arts and poetry and who are

unconcerned about fame and have no fears about old age and dying.

बुद्धिविहीने श्रोतारि वक्तृत्वमनर्थकं भवति पुंसाम् ।

नेत्रविहीने भर्तारि विलासलावण्यवत् स्त्रीणाम् ॥ ६४८

Buddhivihine shrotari vaktrutvamanarthakam bhavati pumsam ।

Netravihine bhartari vilasalavanyavat strinam ॥

If the audience is uncomprehending, people’s sayings become meaningless,

like the graceful movements and beauty of women in front of blind men.

गते शोको न कर्तव्यो भविष्यं नैव चिन्तयेत् ।

वर्तमानेन कालेन वर्तयन्ति विचक्षणाः ॥ ६४९

Gate shoko na kartavyo bhavishyam naiva chintayet ।

Vartamanena kalena vartayanti vichakshanah ॥

Do not keep worrying about past sorrows and future duties.

Wisemen act according to the needs of the present.

केवलं ग्रह नक्षत्रं न करोति शुभशुभम् ।

सर्वमात्रकृतं कर्मं लोकवादो ग्रहा इति ॥ ६५०

Kevalam graha nakshatram na karoti shubhashubham ।

Sarvamatrkrutam karmam lokavado graha iti ॥

Mere planets and stars do not cause good or bad happenings.

They are caused by actions of people and not as misunderstood by society.
