अखण्डमण्डलाकारं व्याप्तं येन चराचरम् ।

तत्पदं दर्शितं येन तस्मै श्री गुरुवे नमः ॥ 756

Akhanadamandalakaram vyaptam yena  characharam ।

Tatpadam darshitam yena tasmai namah ॥

Salutations to the Guru who revealed to me that truth which

pervades the universe encompassing  the moving and immoveable.

 

ज्ञानाढ्यंमलोकज्ञं  कृपणं धनिनं  दरिद्रमभिजातम् ।

गुणवन्तं  श्रुतहीनं  कस्मात्कृतवान्  कृतान्तस्सः ॥ 757

 

Jnanaddhyamalokajnam krupanam dhaninam daridramabhijatam ।

Gunavantam shrutahinam kasmatkrutavan krutantassah ॥

 

Why did the creator make the learned unworldly, a rich man miserly,

a high born poor and a good man devoid of learning?

 

पात्रे त्यागी गुणे रागी संविभागी च बन्धुषु ।

शस्त्रे बोद्धा रणे योद्धा पुरुषः पञ्चलक्षणः ॥ 758

Patre tyagi gune ragi samvibhavi bandhushu ।

Shastre boddha rane yoddha purushah panchalakshanah ॥

 

Charitable to needy, affectionate towards qualities, sharing with relatives,

Learned in scriptures, warrior in war are five qualities adorning a man.

 

पुरा कविनां गणनप्रसङ्गे  कनिष्ठिकाधिष्ठित कालिदासः ।

अद्यापि तत्तुल्यकवेरभावात् अनामिका सार्थवती बभूव ॥ 759

Pura kavinam gananaprasange kanishtikadhishtita kalidasah ।

Adyapi tattulyakaverabhavat anamika sarthavati babhuva ॥

 

In ancient times, when poets were evaluated, Kalidasa was assigned the little finger. When there was a scarcity of comparable poets, the next finger was named Anamika.

 

यथा  खनन् खनित्रेण नरो वार्यधिगच्छति ।

तथा गुरुगातां विद्यां शुश्रूषुरधिगच्छति ॥ 760

Yatha khanan khanitrena naro varyadhigachchati |

Tatha gurugatam vidyam shushrushuradhigachchati ||

 

Just as a man digging with a spade succeeds in getting water,

a committed student gets the knowledge which lies within his teacher.

 इह लोकोऽपि धनिनां परोऽपि स्वजनायते ।

स्वजनोऽपि दरिद्रणां तत्क्षाणाद्दुर्जनायते ॥ 751 

Iha loko api dhaninam paro api svajanayate ।

Svajano api daridranam tatkshanaddurjanayate ॥

 

In this world, rich men are considered their own even by strangers.

Even if related, poor people are immediately considered unrelated.

 

धनस्य यस्यास्ति  न  राजतो  वा  न  चौरतो  वाऽपि  भयं  कदाचित् ।

विद्याख्यमन्तर्धनमर्जयेत्  दन्यद्धनं  नश्यति  सर्वमेव ॥ 752

Dhanasya  yasyasti  na rajato  va na chorato va api bhayam  kadachit ।

Vidyakhyamantardhanamarjayet  danyaddhanam  nashyati  sarvameva ॥

 

Wealth should be such that there will be no fear of being taken over by the king or a thief. Earn the wealth of inner knowledge, as all other wealth is liable to be lost.

 

श्रेयाम्सि बहु विघ्नानि भवन्ति महतामपि ।

अश्रेयसि प्रवृत्तानां दूरं यान्ति विनायकाः ॥ 753

 

Shreyamsi bahu vighnani bhavanti mahatamapi ।

Ashreyasi pravruttanam duram yanti vinayakah ॥

 

Even for the noble, there are many hurdles to perform laudable deeds.

For those involved in disgraceful deeds, even obstacles stay away.

 

धनिकः श्रोत्रियो राजा नदी वैद्यस्तु पंचम ।

पंच यत्र न विद्यन्ते न तत्र दिवसं वसेत् ॥ 754

Dhanikah shrotriyo raja nadi vaidyastu panchama ।

Pancha yatra na vidyante tatra divasam vaset ॥

 

Where the five, Rich man, Pandit, King, River and Doctor are not

present in a place, do not live there even for a day.

 

ऐश्वर्यस्च विभूषणं सुजनता शौर्यस्च वाक्संयमो ।

ज्ञानस्योपशमः कुलस्य विनयो पात्रे व्ययः ॥ 755 

   

Aishvaryasya vibhushanam sujanata shauryasya vaksamyamo ।

Jnanasyopashamah kulasya vinayo patre vyayah  ॥

 

Compassion is the ornament of the wealthy, clarity in speech, of the brave,

Cool-headed ness, of the learned and courteousness, of the high born.

 अयःपिण्ड इवोत्तप्ते खलानां हृदये क्षणात् ।

पतितापि नेक्ष्यन्ते गुणास्तोयकणा इव ॥ ७४६

 

Ayah pinda ivottapte khalanam hrudaye kshanat ।

Patitapi nekshyante gunastoyakana iva ॥

 

Good thoughts entering a villain’s heart will vanish in a second

just like a drop of water falling on a hot iron piece.

 

सन्त एव सतां नित्यं आपदुद्धरणक्षमाः ।

गजानां पङ्कमग्नानां गजा एव धुरन्धराः ॥ ७४७

 

Santa eva satam nityam apaduddharanakshamah ।

Gajanam pankamagnanam gaja eva dhurandharah ॥

 

Only good men will save other good men in difficulties.

An elephant stuck in the mud will be saved by another elephant.

 

अनेकसंशयोच्छेदि परोक्षार्थस्य दर्शकम् ।

सर्वस्य लोचनं शास्त्रं यस्य नास्त्यन्ध एव सः ॥ ७४८

 

Anekasamshayocchedi paroksharthasya darshakam ।

Sarvasya lochanam shastram yasya nastyandha eva sah ॥

 

It clears many doubts, explains things which are not apparent, That knowledge

which becomes eyes for everyone, one who does not see it, is really blind.

 

दह्यन्ते ध्मायमानानां धातूनां हि यथा मलाः ।

तथेन्द्रियाणां दह्यन्ते दोषाः प्राणस्य निग्रहात् ॥ ७४९

 

Dahyante dhmayamananam dhatunam hi yatha malah ।

Tathendriyanam dahyante doshah pranasya nigrahat ॥

 

Just as heating up and blowing remove impurities from metals,

Pranayama removes blemishes and defects in the mind and senses.

 

न कर्मणामनारम्भान्नैष्कर्म्यं पुरुषोऽश्नुते ।

न च संन्यसनादेव सिद्धिं समधिगच्छति  ॥   

काम्यानां कर्मणां न्यासं संन्यासं कवयो विदुः।

सर्वकर्मफलत्यागं प्राहुस्त्यागं विचक्षणाः ॥  750 

 

na karmanamanarambhannaishkarnyam purusho ashrute  ।

na cha sannyasanadeva siddhim samadhigachchhati  ॥ 

kamyanam karmanam nyasam sannyasam kavayo viduh ।

sarvakarmaphalatyagam prahustyagam vichakshanah ॥

 

By merely giving up all activities of the world a person does not become a sanyasi Sanyasa is selfless service and real Tyaga is service without expectation of reward. This is real renunciation according to scholars.

 उत्पत्तावेव रोगस्य क्रियते ध्वंसनं सुखम् ।

व्यापी तु बद्धमूलः स्यादूर्ध्वं स क्षेत्रियोऽथवा ॥ ७४१

 

Utpattaveva rogasya kriyate dhvamsanam sukham ।

Vyapi tu baddhamulah syadurdhvam sa kshetriyo athava ॥

 

Better to root out disease as soon as it manifests itself.

Or it will prolong, take root and establish itself in the body.

 

स्वायत्तमेकान्तगुणं विधात्रा विनिर्मितं छादनमज्ञताया ।

विशेषतः सर्वविदां समाजे विभूषणं मौनमपण्डितानाम् ॥ ७४२

 

Svayattamekantagunam vidhatra vinirmitam chadanamajnataya ।

Visheshatah sarvavidam samaje vibhushanam maunampanditanam ॥

 

The creator has created silence as a quality to cover the ignorance of fools.

Especially, it is an ornament in an assembly of learned men.

 

श्रद्धेव सर्वधर्मस्य चातीव हितकारिणी ।

श्रद्धेव नृणां सिद्धिर्जायते लोकयोर्द्वयोः ॥ ७४३

 

Shraddheva sarvadharmasya chativa hitakarini ।

Shraddheva nrunam siddhirjayate lokayordvayo ॥

 

Immense faith is what does good to one whatever the religion.

It is because of faith people are able to achieve success in both worlds.

 

जाया त्वर्धं शरीरस्य नृणां धर्मादिसाधने ।

नातस्तासु व्यथां काञ्चित् प्रतिकूलं समाचरेत् ॥ ७४४

 

Jaya tvardham sharirasya nrunam dharmadisadhane |

Natastasu vyatham kanchit pratikulam samacharet ||

 

Wives form half part of men for performing religious rites.

Therefore, one should not unnecessarily go against them.

 

प्रथमे नार्जिता विद्या द्वितीये नार्जितं धनम् ।

तृतीये नार्जितं पुण्यं चतुर्थे किं करिष्यति ॥ ७४५

 

Prathame narjita vidya dvitiye narjitam dhanam ।

Trutiye narjitam punyam chaturthe kim karishyati ॥

 

In the first stage, you did not acquire education, in the second you did not earn money, in the third you did not acquire merit (Punya), what can you do in the fourth stage?

 कष्टेन हि गुणग्रामं प्रगुणीकुरुते मुनिः ।

ममता राक्षसी सर्वं भक्षयत्येकहेलया ॥ ७३६

 

Kashtena hi gunagramam pragunikurute munih ।

Mamata rakshasa sarvam bhakshatyekahelaya ॥

 

A sage acquires good qualities after great effort.

The demoness of attachment swallows all in one stroke.

 

प्रदोषे दीपकश्चंद्रः प्रभाते दीपको रविः ।

त्रैलोक्ये दीपको धर्मः सुपुत्रः कुलदीपकः ॥ ७३७

 

Pradoshe dipakashchandrah prabhate dipako ravih ।

Tailoke dipako dharmah suputrah kuladipakah ॥

 

Moon is the beacon of light in the evenings, Sun is the beacon in the mornings

Dharma is the beacon in three worlds, a good son is the beacon for the family.

 

नापृष्टः कस्यचिद् ब्रूयात् न चान्यायेन पृच्छतः ।

जानन्नापि हि मेधावी जडवल्लोक आचरेत् ॥ ७३८

 

Naprushtah kasyachid bruyat na chanyayena pruchchatah ।

Janannapi hi medhavi jadavalloka acharet ॥

 

Do not speak unless you are asked to. Do not speak if asked unfairly.

A wise man though well aware of things will behave like an ignorant man.

 

अनुकूले विधौ देयं यतः पूरयिता हरिः ।

प्रतिकूले विधौ देयं यतः सर्वम् हरिश्यति ॥ ७३९

 

Anukule vidhau deyam yatah purayita harih ।

Pratikule vidhau deyam sarvam harishyati ॥

 

When in comfort one should give as Lord is the supplier. When in

discomfort one should give as otherwise fate will take away everything.

 

उपकारगृहीतेषु शत्रुणा शत्रुमुद्धरेत् ।

पादलग्नं करस्थेन कण्टकेनैव कण्टकम् ॥ ७४०

 

Upakaragruhiteshu shatruna shatrumuddharet ।

Padalagnam karasthena kantakenaiva kantakam ॥

 

Make use of the help of an enemy to defeat another enemy. Just like

a thorn removed from the foot by holding another thorn in the hand.
