पंकैर्विना सरो भाति सभा खलजनैर्विना ।

कटुवर्णैर्विना काव्यं मानसं विषयैर्विना ॥ ७३१

 

Pankairvina saro bhati sabha khalajanairvina ।

Katuvarnairvina kavyam manasam vishayarvina ॥

 

A lake without silt, an assembly without wicked people,

poetry without harsh words and a clear mind are certain to shine.

 

वाङ्माधुर्यात्सर्वलोकप्रियत्वं वाक्पारुष्यात्सर्वलोकोपकारि ।

किं वा लोके कोकिलेनोपनीतं को वा लोके रासभेनापराधः ॥  ७३२

 

Vangmadhuryatsarvalokapriyatvam vakparushyatsarvalokopakari ।

Kim va loke kokilenopanitam ko va loke rasabhanaparadhah ॥

 

One is loved by all because of sweetness of speech and one is detested by all because of harsh speech. But what has a nightingale given to the world and what crime has a donkey committed?

 

दिवसेनैव तत्कुर्यात् येन रात्रौ सुखं वसेत् ।

यावज्जीवं च तत्कुर्याद येन प्रेत्य सुखं वसेत् ॥ ७३३

 

Divasenaiva tatkuryat yena ratrau sukham vaset ।

Yavajjevam cha tatkuryat yena pretya sukham vaset ॥

 

Indulge in such deeds during daytime by which one is happy in the night.

Whoever indulges in such things will sleep happily at night.

 

सुलभाः पुरुषा लोके सततं प्रियवादिनः ।

अप्रियस्य च पथ्यस्य वक्ता श्रोता च दुर्लभः ॥ ७३४

 

Sulabhah purusha loke satatam priyavadinah ।

Apriyasya cha pathyasya vakta shrota cha durlabhah ॥

 

Easy to find in this world people who always talk sweetly.

Speakers and listeners of unpleasant but beneficial words are rare.

 

न जातु कामः कामानुपभोगेन शाम्यति ।

हविषा कृष्णवत्मैर्व भुय एवाभिवर्धते ॥ ७३५

 

Na jatu kamah kamanupabhogena shamyati ।

Havisha krushnavatmairva bhuya evabhivardhate ॥ 

 

No desire ever ends even if it is satisfied.

Ghee offered to the fire only makes the fire burn stronger.
