मित्रस्य मा चक्षुषा सर्वाणि भूतानि समीक्षन्ताम् ।

मित्रस्याहं चक्षुषा सर्वाणि भूतानि समीक्षे मित्रस्य चक्षुषा समीक्षामहे ॥ 1201

 

Mitrasya ma chakshusha sarvani bhutani samikshantam ।

Mitrasyaham chakshusha sarvani bhutani samikshe mitrasya chakshusha samikshamahe ॥

 

Let me see every creature in this world with a friendly eye. Let the

world see me with the same. Let everybody in the world see each other likewise.

 

शुश्रूषा श्रवणं चैव ग्रहणं धारणां तथा ।

ऊहापोहोऽर्थ विज्ञानं तत्त्वज्ञानं च धीगुणाः ॥ 1202

 

Shushrusha shravanam chaiva grahanam dharanam tatha ।

Uhapoho artha vijnanam tattvajnam cha dhigunah ॥

 

 

To listen carefully, to understand and remember what is heard, to be able to draw conclusions about all aspects and science of what is heard are qualities of intelligence.

 

शौर्यं तेजो धृतिर्दाक्ष्यं युद्धे चाप्यपलायनम् ।

दानमीश्वरभावश्च क्षात्रं कर्म स्वभावजम् ॥ 1203

 

Shauryam tejo dhrutirdakshyam yuddhe chapyapalayanam ।

Danamishvarabhavashcha kshatram karma svabhavajam ॥

 

Bravery, boldness, fortitude, promptness, not running from battle, generosity

and lordliness are the duties of the Kshatriyas, born of nature.

 

 

नात्यन्तं सरलैर्भाव्यं गत्वा पश्य वनस्थलीम् ।

छिद्यन्ते सरलास्तत्र कुब्जास्तिष्ठन्ति पादपाः ॥ 1204

 

Natyantam saralairbhavyam gatva pashya vanasthalīm ।

Chidyante saralastatra kubjastishthanti padapah ॥

 

Do not be simple in your dealings. You would see in forest that

straight trees are cut down while crooked ones are left standing.

 

सन्तोषामृततृप्तानां यत्सुखं शान्तिरेव च ।

न च तद्धनलुब्धानामितश्चेतश्च धावाताम् ॥ 1205

 

Santoshamrutatruptanam yatsukham shantireva cha ।

Na cha taddhanalubdhanamitashchetashcha dhavatam ॥

 

The well-being and peace obtained by people from the nectar of happiness

will not be obtained by people who run after money here and there.

 संतापं तनुते भिनत्ति विनयं सौहार्दमुत्सादयत्युद्वेगं

जनयत्यवद्यवचनं सूते विधत्ते कलिम् ।

कीर्तिं कृंतति दुर्मतिं वितरति व्याहन्ति पुण्योदयं

दत्ते यः कुगतिं स हातुमुचितो रोषः स दोषः सताम्  ॥ 1191

 

Santapam tanute bhinatti vinayam sauhardamutsadayatyudvegam janayatyavadyavachanam sute vidhatte kalim l

kIrtim kruntati durmatim vitarati vyahanti punyodayam

datte yah kugatim sa hatumuchito roshah sa doshah satam ll

 

Anger has will cause distress, will kill humility and friendship, will beget anxiety. It will make one say unutterable words. It will give rise to differences. It will cut short one’s fame. It will spread wickedness. It will diminish one’s collected good karma and lead one to a path of destruction.

 

नन्वाश्रयस्थिरियं तव कालकूट केनोत्तरोत्तरविशिष्टपदोपदिष्टा ।

प्रागर्णवस्य हृदये वृषलक्ष्मणोऽथ कण्टेऽधुना वससि वाचि पुनः खलानाम् ॥ 1192

 

Nanvashrayasthiriyam tava kalakuta kenottaravishishtapadopadishta l

Pragarnasya hrudaye vrushalakshmano atha kante adhuna vasasi vachi punah khalanam ll

 

One finds you with varied hosts at different times, Oh deadly poison Kalakuta.

Wonder on whose command you act. Earlier you were hidden in the heart of the ocean, then in the throat of Lord Shiva. Now you reside in the speech of the wicked.

 

दुर्जनः परिहर्तव्यः विद्यया भूषितोऽपि सन् ।
मणिनालङ्कृतः सर्पः किमसौ न भयङ्करः ॥ 1193

Durjanah parihartavyah vidyaya bhushito api san l

Maninalankruta sarpah kimasau na bhayankarah ll

 

Avoid wicked people even if they are adorned with the quality of education.

How is a snake decorated with jewels not dangerous?

 

मनीषिणः संति न ते हितैषिणो हितैषिणः संति न ते मनीषिणः ।
सुहृच्च विद्वानपि दुर्लभो नृणां यथौषधं स्वादु हितं च दुर्लभम् ॥ 1194

 

ManIshinah na te hitainshino hitaishinah santi na te manIshinah ।
Suhrut cha vidvanapi durlabho nrunam yatha aushadham svadu hitam cha durlabham ॥

 

There are wisemen but they are not my well wishers. There are well-wishers but they are not wise. It is difficult in this world to find a person who is both wise and a well wisher, just like it is hard to find medicine that also tastes good.

 

पिबन्ति नद्यः स्वयमेव नाम्भः स्वयं न खादन्ति फलानि वृक्षाः।

नादन्ति सस्यं खलु वारिवाहाः परोपकाराय सतां विभूतयः॥ 1195

 

Pibanti nadyah svayameva nambhah svayam na khadanti phalani vrukshah ।

Nadanti sasyam khalu varivahah paropakaraya satam vibhutayah ॥

 

Rivers do not drink their own water trees do not eat their own fruits. 

Clouds do not eat crops they have watered. Wealth of good people is to help others

मातेव रक्षति पितेव हिते नियुङ्क्ते कान्तेव चाभिरमयत्यपनीय खेदं ।

कीर्तिं च दिक्षु वितनोति तनोति लक्ष्मीं किं किं न साधयति कल्पलतेव विद्या ॥ 1186

 

Mateva rakshati piteva hite niyunkte kanteva chabhiramayatyapaniya khedam l

kirtim cha dikshu vitanoti tanoti lakshmim kim kim na sadhayati kalpalateva vidya ll

 

It protects one like a mother, cares for one like a father, entertains and shields one from misfortune like a wife, brings about fame and prosperity. Very little that one cannot achieve with knowledge, as with kalpavruksha.

 

सहजान्धदृशः स्वदुर्नये परदोषेक्षणदिव्यचक्षुषः ।

स्वगुणोच्चगिरो मुनिव्रत्ताः परवर्णग्रहणेष्वसाधवः ॥ 1187

 

Sahajandhadrushah svadurnaye paridoshekshanadivyachakshushah l

Svagunochchagiro munivrattah paravarnagrahaneshvasadhavah ll

 

Blind to shortcomings in self. Extremely good sight while finding fault in others.

Loud voice when talking about self and a saint like silence when praising others.

Such is the nature of bad people.

 

व्याघ्रीव तिष्ठति जरा परितर्जयन्ति रोगाश्च शत्रव इव प्रहरन्ति देहम् ।
आयुः परिस्रवति भिन्नघटादिवाम्भः लोकस्तथाऽप्यहितमाचरतीति चित्रम् ॥ 1188

Vyaghrīva tishtthati jara paritarjayanti rogashcha shatrava iva praharanti deham l
Ayuh parisravati bhinnaghatadivambhah lokastathapyahitamacaratiti chitram ll

 

Fearsome is old age like a tiger, Illness attacks the body like enemies.
Lifetime flows ot like water from a leaky vessel. Is it not a wonder that people engage in actions not conducive to well-being?

 

आदित्यस्य गतागतैरहरहः संक्षीयते जीवितम्
व्यापारैर्बहुकार्यभारगुरुभिः कालो न विज्ञायते ।
दृष्ट्वा जन्मजराविपत्तिमरणं त्रासश्च नोत्पद्यते
पीत्वा मोहमयीं प्रमादमदिरामुन्मत्तभूतं जगत् ॥ 1189

 

Aditysya gatagatairaharahah samkshiyate jivitam

Vyaparairbahukaryabharagurubhih kalo na vijnayate l

Drushtva janmajaravipattimaranam trasashcha notpadyate

Pitva mohamayim pramadamadiramunmattabhutam jagat ll

Life shortens day by day as the sun rises and sets. Subject to the pressure of mundane activities, one fails to see how time flies. One is not afraid despite beholding birth, misery, old age, and death. In fact, the world is intoxicated by the mysterious wine of delusion.

 

नात्युच्चशिखरो मेरुर्नातिनीचं रसातलम् व्यवसायद्वितीयानां नात्यपारो महोदधि: । 1190

Natyuchchashikharo merurnatinicham rasatalam vyavasayadvitiyanam natyaparo mahodadhih l

For a person who depends on his own efforts, the peak of a mountain is not very high, the bottom of the earth is not too deep and the ocean is not difficult to cross.

 अप्रकटीकृतशक्ति: शक्तोपि जनस्तिरस्क्रियां लभते ।

निवसन्नन्तर्दारुणि लङ्घ्यो वह्निर्न तु ज्वलित: ॥ 1181

 

Aprakatikrutashaktih shaktopi janastiraskriyam labhate l

Nivasannantardaruni langhyo vahnirna tu jvalitah ll

 

The strength of a strong man is neglected until he shows it.

People are not afraid of wood, but they are when it starts burning.

 

एकः शत्रुर्न द्वितीयोऽस्ति शत्रुः ।

अज्ञानतुल्यः पुरुषस्य राजन् ॥ 1182

 

Ekah shatrurna dvitiyo asti shatruh l

Ajnanatulyam purushasya rajan ll

 

Rajan! Man has only one enemy, no other.

There is no enemy equalling ignorance.

 

पिण्डे पिण्डे मतिर्भिन्ना कुण्डे कुण्डे नवं पयः ।
जातौ जातौ नवाचाराः नव वानी मुखे मुखे ॥ 1183

 

Pinde pinde matirbhinna kunde kunde navam payah l

Jatau jatau navacharah nava vani mukhe mukhe ll

 

Different minds in every head. different water in each pot.

Different customs from group to group. different voices in each mouth.

 

प्रथमवयसि पीतं तोयमल्पं स्मरन्तः शिरसि निहीतभाराः नारिकेला नराणाम् ।
ददति जलमनल्पात स्वादमाजीवितान्तं नहि कृतमुपकारं साधवो विस्मरन्ति ॥ 1184

 

Prathamavayasi pitam toyamalpam smarantah shirasi nihitabharah narikela naranam l

Dadati jalamanalpat svasamajivitantam nahi krutamupakaram sadhavo vismaranti ll

A coconut tree remembers the watering it received from men early in its life even when it is old and keeps on giving them coconut water all its life. Good people never forget the favours they have received.

 

कर्तव्यं आचरं कामम् अकर्तव्यं अनाचरम् ।
तिष्ठति प्राकृताचारो य सः आर्य इति स्मृतः ॥ 1185

 

Kartavyam acharam kamam akartvyam anacharam l

Tishtati prakrutacharo ya sah arya iti smrutah ll

 

One who follows customs as laid out by many, one who does not do

what should not be done and who stands by natural customs is an Arya.
