भवेऽस्मिन् पवनोद्भ्रान्तवीचि विभ्रमभङ्गुरे ।

जायते पुणय्योगेन परार्थे जीवितव्ययः ॥ १54१

 

Bhave asmin pavanodbhrantavici vibhramabhangure ।
Jayate punayyogena pararthe jivitavyayah ॥

 

In this worldly existence, which is as fleeting as the curling up of a wave raised by the wind, forsaking one’s life for the sake of another happens due to extraordinary virtue.

 

दातृत्वं प्रियवक्तृत्वं धीरत्वमुचितज्ञता ।

अभ्यासेन न लभ्येयुश्चत्वारः सहजाः गुणाः ॥ १54२

Datrutvam priyavaktrutvam dhiratvamuchitajnata ।
Abhyasena na labhyeyushchatvarah sahajah gunah ॥

 

Generosity, speaking agreeably, fortitude and knowledge of what is proper are

qualities which occur naturally and cannot be acquired through practice.

 

मुक्तिमिच्छसि चेत्तात विषयान्विषवत्त्यजेः ।

क्षमार्जवदयाशौचं सत्यं पीयूषवत्पिबे: ॥ १54३

Muktimichchasi chettata vishayanvishavattyajeh ।

Kshamarjavadayashaucham satyam piyushavatpibeh ॥

If you desire ultimate release, discard the poisonous elements of things.

Embrace tolerance, simple thinking, kindness, and truth as equal to nectar.

 

निःस्पृहो नाधिकारी स्यान्नाकामी मण्डनप्रियः।
नाविदग्धः प्रियं ब्रूयात् स्फुटवक्ता न वञ्चकः ॥ १544

 

Nispruho nadhikari syannakami mandanapriyah ।

Navidagdhah priyam bruyat sputavakta na vanchakah ॥

A person in authority would not be free from self-interest, a person fond of decorating himself would not be free from lustful desires, an unrefined person is not expected to speak in a pleasing manner and a frank open speaker would not be a cheat.

 

दाता क्षमी गुणग्राही स्वामी दुःखेन लभ्यते ।
शुचिर्दक्षोऽनुरक्तश्च जाने भृत्योऽपि दुर्लभः ॥ १545

 

Data kshami gunagrahi svami dukhena labhyate ।
shuchirdaksho anuraktashcha jane bhrutyo api durlabhah ॥

 

A master who is generous, tolerant, and appreciative of good work is hard to find

but it is also rare to find an honest, smart, and loyal servant.

 

विनयान्वितस्वान्तःशुद्धाचारसमन्वितः ।

जिज्ञासु: सत्यवादी च विद्यार्थी प्रियदर्शन: ॥ १546

 

Vinayanvitasvantahshuddhacharasamanvitah ।

Jijnasuh satyavadi cha Vidyarthi priyadarshanah ॥

 

A courteous, well behaved, with clean habits and interested

in learning, truthful student is a pleasure to behold.

 

विश्वासयेत्परांश्चैव विश्वसेच्च न कस्यचित्।
पुत्रेष्वपि हि राजेन्द्र विश्वासो न प्रशस्यते ॥ १547

 

Vishvasayetparamshchaiva vishvasechcha na kasyachit ।

Putreshvapi hi Rajendra vishvaso na prashasyate ॥

 

Oh, King, one’s behaviour should be such that it would make others trust him, but one should never place full confidence in anyone. Even placing trust in one’s own children is not recommended

 

उपकर्त्रारिणा सन्धिर्न मित्रेणापकारिणा ।
उपकारापकारो हि लक्ष्यं लक्षणम् एतयोः ॥ १54८

Upakartrariṇa sandhirna mitrenapakariṇa ।
Upakarapakaro hi lakhṣyam lakṣhanam etayoḥ ॥

Association with a helping enemy is better than having a betraying friend. Helping or injuring are the characteristics for deciding whether one is an enemy or a friend.

 

दर्शनध्यानसंस्पर्शैर्मत्सी कूर्मी च पक्षिणी ।
शिशुं पालयते नित्यं तथा सज्जनसंगतिः ॥ १549

Darshanadhyanasamsparshairmatsi kurmi cha pakshini |

Shishum palayate nityam tatha sajjanasangatih ||

 

Just like fish, tortoises and birds provide protection to their young ones by sjght, mind and touch,  the company of noble people provides protection to people around them.

आप्तवाक्यमनादृत्य दर्पेणाचरितं यदि ।

फलितं विपरीतं तत् का तत्र परिदेवना ॥ १55०

 

Aptavakyamanadrutya darpeṇacharitam yadi ।
Phalitam viparitam tat ka tatra paridevana ॥

 

Disregarding the words of a well-wisher, if a person acts due to pride, the result will be contrary. Why lament at such a result?

 यो येन प्रतिबद्धःस्यात् सह तेनोदयी व्ययी ।

स विश्वस्तो नियोक्तव्यः प्राणेषु च धनेषु च ॥ १5३१

 

Yo yena pratibaddhah syāt saha tenodayi vyayi ।
Sa vishvasto niyoktavyah paraneshu cha dhaneshu cha ॥

 

One whose rise and fall are connected with one’s own, should be

appointed as bodyguard to protect life and the treasury.

 

अनित्यं यौवनं रूपं जीवितं द्रव्यसंचय: ।
आरोग्यं प्रियसंवासो गृध्येत्तत्र न पण्डितः ॥ १5३२

Anityam yauvanam rupam jivitam dravyasanchayah ।

Arogyam priyasamvaso grudhyettatra na panditah ॥

 

Youth, appearance, life span, accumulated wealth, good health and company of beloved people are not eternal. Hence a wise person should not strive after them greedily.

आपद्युन्मार्ग गमने कार्यकालात्ययेषु च ।
कल्याणवचनं ब्रूयादपृष्टो ऽपि हितो नरः ॥ १5३३

 

Apadyunmarga gamane karyakalatyayeshu cha ।

Kalyanavachanam bruyādaprushto api hito narah ॥

 

When there is a calamity and a man strays from the right path, or when at the time for action, he runs away, a friendly man, even unasked, should give wholesome advice.

 

संग्रामे सुभटेन्द्राणां कवीनां कविमण्डले ।

दीप्तिर्वा दीप्तिहानिर्वा मुहूर्तादेव जायते ॥ १5३4

Sangrame subhatendranam kavinam kavimandale ।

Diptirva diptihanirva muhurtadeva jayate ॥

 

If one does not see well trained soldiers shining in the war arena and learned poets shining in poetry groups, it will be like darkness occurring instantly.

 

अपूज्या यत्र पूज्यन्ते पूज्यानां च व्यतिक्रमः ।
त्रीणि तत्र भविष्यन्ति दुर्भिक्षं मरणं भयम् ॥ १5३5

 

Apujya yatra pujyante pujyanam cha vyatikramah ।

Trini tatra bhavishyanti durbhiksham maranam bhayam ॥

 

Where undeserving persons are honoured and the deserving are neglected,

three things, namely, famine, incidence of death and terror, are sure to occur.

 

किं तया क्रियते धेन्वा या न दोग्ध्री न गर्भिणी ।
कोऽर्थः पुत्रेण जातेन यो न विद्वान् न भक्तिमान् ॥ १5३6

 

Kim taya kriyate dhenva ya na dogdhri na garbhini ।

Ko arthah putrena jatena yo na vidvan na bhaktiman ॥

 

What one can one do with a cow that does not give any milk nor gets pregnant.

What use is there of getting a son who is not learned nor he is devoted.

 

प्रियं ब्रूयादकृपणः शूरः स्यादविकत्थनः ।
दाता नापात्रवर्षी च प्रगल्भः स्यादनिष्ठुरः ॥ १5३7

Priyam bruyadakrupanaḥh shurah syadavikatthanah ।
Data napatravarshī cha pragalbhah syadanisthurah ॥

The generous should speak kindly, the valiant should desist from boasting, the liberal should ensure his bounty is not for the unworthy, and the brave should not be harsh.

 

आपत्काले तु संप्राप्ते यन्मित्रं मित्रमेव तत् ।

वृद्धिकाले तु संप्राप्ते दुर्जनोऽपि सुहृद् भवेत् ॥ १5३८

 

Apatkāle tu samprapte yanmitraṁ mitrameva tat ।
Vruddhikale tu samprapte durjano api suhrud bhavet ॥

 

A real friend is one ho proves to be a friend during distress. in times of prosperity, even a wicked person becomes a friend.

तन्मूलं गुरुतायास्तत्सौख्यं तद्यशस्तदौर्जित्यम् ।

तत्सौभाग्यं पुंसां यदेतदप्रार्थनं नाम ॥ १5३9

Tanmulam gurutayastatsukhyam tadyashastadaurjityam ।

Tatsaubhagyam pumsam yadetadaprarthanam nama ॥

 

Asking nothing of anybody is greatness, is happiness,

is success, is strength and is fortune

 

संसारतापदग्धानां त्रयो विश्रान्तिहेतवः ।
अपत्यं च कलत्रं च सतां सङ्गतिरेव च ॥ १54०

 

Samsaratapadagdhanam trayo vishrantihetavah ।

Apatyam cha kalatram cha satam sangatireva cha ॥

 

For people who are tormented with miseries of day- to- day worldly life, having a child at home, a wife and company of noble people, are three good sources of relaxation.

वसन्त यौवना वृक्षाः पुरुषा धन यौवनाः ।

सौभाग्य यौवना नार्यो युवानो बुद्धि यौवनाः ॥ १5२१

Vasanta yauvana vrukshah purusha dhana yauvanah ।

Saubhagya yauvana naryo yuvano buddhi yauvanah ॥

 

Spring is the youth of trees, wealth is the youth of men, beauty is the

youth of women and intelligence is the youth of the young.

 

उद्धाटितनवद्वारे पञ्जरे विहगोऽनिलः ।

यत्तिष्ठति तदाश्चर्यं प्रयाणे विस्मयः कुतः ॥ १5२२

 

Uddhatitanavadvare panjare vihago anilah ।

Yattishtati tadashcharyam prayane vismayah kutah ॥

 

Even when nine doors of the cage are open, the life-bird does not fly away.

That it stays till prescribed longevity is not over should not be a surprise.

 

विद्यामदो धनमदस्तृतीयोऽभिजनो मदः ।
एते मदावलिप्तानामेत एव सतां दमाः ॥ १5२३

Vidhyamado dhana madastrutiyo abhijano madah ।
Ete madavaliptanaeta eva satam damah ॥

Pride of learning, pride of wealth, pride of family, these three are intoxications for the haughty while these three make the virtuous humble and self-controlled.

 

अव्यवस्थितचित्तस्य प्रसादोऽपि भयंकर: ।

व्यवस्थितप्रसन्नात्मा कुपितोऽप्यभयंकर: ॥ १5२4

Avyavasthitachittasya prasado api bhayankarah ।
Vyavasthitaprasannatma kupito apyabhayankara: ॥

 

Even favours shown by one who has no steadiness of mind is frightening

but one who is steady and serene, though flies to anger does not cause fear.

 

दायादादपरो यस्मान्नास्ति भेदकरो द्विषाम् ।
तस्मादुत्थापयेद्यत्नाद्दायादं तस्य विद्विषः ॥ १5२5

 

Dayadadaparo yasmannasti bhedakaro dvisham ।
Tasmadutthapayed yatnaddayadam tasya vidvishah ॥

 

To win over a kinsman of the enemy is the best policy in creating a division among enemies; therefore, one should assiduously try to set-up a kinsman against the enemy.

 

अलब्धमीहेद्धर्मेण लब्धं यत्नेन पालयेत् ।

पालितं वर्धयेन्नीत्या वृध्दं पात्रेषु निक्षिपेत् ॥ १5२6

 

Alabdhamīheddharmeṇa labdham yatnena palayet ।
Palitam vardhayennītya vrudhdam patreshu nikshipet ॥

One should attempt to obtain by lawful means what has not been obtained. What one has obtained one should protect diligently. What one has obtained one should increase by moral ways. What has been increased one should entrust to worthy persons.

उत्पन्नपश्चात्तापस्य बुद्धिर्भवति यादृशी ।
तादृशी यदि पूर्वा स्यात्कस्य स्यान्न महोदयः ॥ १5२7

Utpannapashchattapasya buddhirbhavati yadrushi ।

Tadrushi yadi purva syatkasya syanna mahodayah ॥

 

Similar to one becoming wise enough to feel regret after the event,

If one became wise before the event, one wouldn’t have to apologise to anyone.

 

यत्र राजा तत्र कोशो विना कोशं न राजता ।
सुभटेभ्यस्ततो दद्यात् को हि दातुर्न युध्यते ॥ १5२८

 

Yatra rāja tatra kosho vinā kosham na rajata ।
Subhatebhyastato dadyat ko hi datur na yudhyate ॥

 

Whereever the king is, the treasury should be with him. There is no royalty without treasure. He should be liberal in paying his soldiers. Who does not fight for the generous?

 

उपार्जितानां वित्तानां त्यागएव हि रक्षणम् । 

तडागोदरसंस्थानां परीवाह इवाम्भसाम् ॥ १5२9

Uparjitanam vittanam tyaga eva hi rakshanam ।

Tadagodarasamsthanam parivaha ivambhasam ॥

 

Just as surplus water of a pond is put to best use by constructing overflow gates,

wealth acquired through various means can be put to good use by renouncing it for charity.

 

आदाय करमाढ्येभ्यः कीकटेष्वपि वर्षसि ।

प्रपीय वारि सिन्धुभ्यः स्थलेष्विव घनाघनः ॥ १5३०

 

Adaya karamaddhyebhyah kikateshvapi varshasi ।
Prapiya vari sindhubhyah sthaleshviva ghanaghanah ॥

After collecting taxes from rich people, I hope you shower them down on the needy, just as a rain cloud, drinking up water from the sea (or rivers / streams), showers down on every piece of land.
