नापृष्टः कस्यचिद् ब्रूयान्न     चान्यायेन पृच्छतः ।

जानन्नपि हि मेधावी    जडवल्लोक आचरेत् ॥ 961

 

Naprushtah kasyachid bruyanna chanyayena pruchchatah ।

Janannapi hi medhavi jadavalloka acharet ॥

 

A person should not explain anything unless asked nor answer a person with

improper intention.Let a wise man  though he knows  behave like an idiot.

 

हर्तृ र्न गोचरं याति दत्ता भवति विस्तृता ।

कल्पान्तेऽपि न या नश्येत् किमन्यद्विद्यया विना ॥ 962

 

Hartrurna gocharam yati datta bhavati vistruta ।

kalpaantepi na yaa nashyet kimanyadvidyayaa vinaa ॥

 

One not perceptible to thieves, one which increases by giving, one not

destroyed even at the end of time, knowledge is like no other wealth.

 

न तेभ्योऽभ्यधिकाः सन्ति सन्तः सत्यपुरुषव्रताः ।

दुःखपङ्कार्णवे मग्नं दीनमभ्युद्धरन्ति ये ॥ 963

 

Na tebhyo abhyadhikah santi santah satyapurushvratah ।

Dukhapankarnave magnam dInamabhyddharanti ye ॥

 

There are no superior people among saintly people than

those who pull out people sunk in the mire of unhappiness.

 

कालाकालौ सम्प्रधार्य बलाबलमात्मनः ।

परस्परं बलं ज्ञात्वा तत्रात्मानं नियोजयेत् ॥ 964

 

Kalakalau sampradharya balabalamatmanah ।

Parasparam balam jnatva tatratmanam niyojayet ॥

 

Taking into account the right or wrong time, one’s strengths and weaknesses,comparing with those of the opponent one should take up the work.

 

आपदर्थे धनं रक्षेद् दारान् रक्षेद्धनैरपि ।

आत्मानं सततं रक्षेद्दारैपि धनैरपि ॥ 965

 

Apadarthe dhanam rakshed daran raksheddhanairapi ।

Atmanam satatam raksheddharairapi dhanairapi ॥

 

In times of danger, save maney, save your wife more than the

money, but always save yourself even more than money and wife.

 

 बहुरक्षितबहुशिक्षितनीचजनो भजति नैव सन्मार्गम् ।

पुच्चमिव शुनो नालिकाधृतमपि सरलं यथा न स्यात् ॥ 956

 

Bahurakshitabahushikshitanichajano bhajati naiva sanmargam ।

Puchchamiva shuno nalikadhrutamapi saralam yatha na syat ॥

 

Well isolated and well instructed wicked persons do not take to the right path.Like the tail of a dog which does not straighten even after being kept in a pipe.

 

न शापो नाभिचरणं न वह्निर्न विषं तथा ।

नास्त्राणि न च शस्त्राणि यथा तीक्ष्णतमा क्षमा ॥ 957

 

Na shapo nabhicharanam na vahnirna visham tatha ।

Nastrani na cha shastrani yatha tIkshnatama kashama ॥

 

No curse, black magic, fire, poison, weapons,

missiles is/are as sharp in effect as forbearance.

 

प्रियं ब्रूयादकृपणः शूरः स्यादविकत्थनः ।

दाता नापात्रवर्षी च प्रगल्भः स्यादनिष्ठुरः ॥ 958

 

Priyam bruyadakrupanah shurah syadavikatthanah ।

Data napatravarshI cha pragalbhah syadanishtarah ॥

 

The generous one should speak sweetly, the brave should not boast, one should give without wasting on the unworthy, one should be bold without being harsh.

उत्तमो नातिवक्ता स्यात् अधमो बहुभाषते ।
न काञ्चने ध्वनिस्तादृक् यादृक् कांस्ये प्रजायते ॥ 959

 

Uttamo nativakta syaat adhamo bahubhashate ।

Na kanchane dhvanistadruk yadruk kansye prajaayate ॥

 

Great men rarely talk too much as inferior men do.
There is not as much sound from gold as there is from brass.

 

पूज्यते यदपूज्योऽपि यदगम्योऽपि गम्यते ।

वन्द्यते यदवन्द्योऽपि स प्रभावोधनस्य च ॥ 960

 

Pujyate yadapujyo api yadagamyo api gamyate ।

Vandyate yadavandyo api prabhavo dhanasya cha ॥

 

One undeserving is worshipped, one undeserving is visited

one undeserving is saluted, all because of the influence of wealth.

 सा विद्या या मदं हन्ति सा श्रीयारर्थिषु वर्षति ।

धर्मानुसारिणी या सा बुद्धिरभिधीयते ॥ 951 

 

Sa vidya ya madam hanti sa shriryarthishu varshati ।

Dharmanusarini ya sa buddhirabhidhiyate ॥

 

Knowledge is that which kills arrogance, wealth is that which

rains money on one, intellect is that which conforms to Dharma.

 

राजतः सलिलादग्नेश्चोरतः स्वजनादपि ।

भयमर्थवतां नित्यं मृत्योः प्राणभृतामिव ॥ 952

 

Rajatah saliladagneshchoratah svajanadapi ।

Bhayamarthavatam nityam mrutyo pranabhrutamiva ॥

 

Just like all beings are in fear of death, people with money are

constantly in dread of the king, water, fire, thieves and relatives.

 

 

ययोरेव समं वित्तं ययोरेव समं श्रुतम् ।

तयोर्विवाहः सख्यं च न तु पुष्टविपुष्टयोः ॥ 953

 

Yayoreva samam vittam yayoreva samam shrutam ।

Tayorvivahah sakhyam cha na tu pushtavipushtayoh ॥

 

Marriage and friendship will be proper for those equal in wealth and

education. Not between those where one is strong and the other weak.

 

सहस्व श्रियमन्वेषां यद्यपि त्वयि नास्ति सा ।

अन्यत्रापि सतीं लक्ष्मीं कुशला भुञ्जते सदा ॥ 954

 

Sahsva shriyamanvesham yadyapi tvayi nasti sa ।

Anyatraapi satIm kushala bhunjate sada ॥

 

Tolerate the wealth of others even though you do not have it.

Wise men are happy with wealth even though someone else has it.

 

स्वस्योन्नतेषु जनितं हृदि कोपवेगं निघ्ने प्रदर्शयति भृत्यजने मनुष्यः ।

स्वश्रूगतं हृदयवर्धितमात्मकोपं भाण्डे प्रदर्शयति हस्तगते बधूटी ॥ 955

 

Svasyonnateshu janitam hrudi kopavegam nighne pradarshayati bhrutyajane manushyah ।

Svashrugatam hrudayavardhitamatmakopam bhande pradarshayati badhuti ॥

 

A man angry with his superiors makes his servants the objects of his rage.

The daughter-in-law angry with her mother-in-law takes it out on the pot.

 

 ज्ञानवृद्धास्तपोवृद्धाः शीलवृद्धास्तथैव च ।

सर्वे ते धनवृद्धस्य द्वारि तिष्ठन्ति किङ्गराः ॥ 946  

 

Jnanavruddhastapovruddhah shilavruddhastathaiva cha ।

Sarve te dhanavruddhasya dvari tishtanti kinkarah ॥

 

Those who are great in knowledge, penance and conduct,

all stand at the doors of those great in wealth like servants.

 

व्यायामात् लभते स्वास्थ्यं दीर्घायुष्यं बलं सुखम् ।
आरोग्यं परमं भाग्यं स्वास्थ्यं सर्वार्थसाधनम् ॥ 947

Vyayamat labhate svasthyam dirghayushyam balam sukham ।

Arogyam paramam bhagyam svasthyam sarvarthasadhanam ॥

One gets health, strength, long life and happiness from exercise.

Good health is a great blessing, it is the means to achieve all goals.

 

धर्माय यशसेऽर्थाय कामाय स्वजनाय च ।

पञ्चधा विभजन् वित्तम् इहामुत्र च मोदते ॥ 948

 

Dharmaya yashase arthaya kamaya svajanaya cha ।

Panchadha vibhajan vittam ihamutra cha modate ॥

 

One should allocate wealth in five ways - for religious purposes,

to gain fame, to add to wealth, to satisfy desires and to help kith & kin

to be happy in this world and the next.

 

नीरस्यान्यपि रोचन्ते कार्पासस्य फलानि मे l
येषां गुणमयं जन्म परेषां गुह्यगुप्तये ll 949

Nirasyanyapi rochante kaarpasasya phalani me ।
Yesham gunamayam janma paresham guhyaguptaye ॥

Even though it appears uninteresting, the qualities of cotton appeal to me.

Its life is full of goodness and it helps conceal others bare faults.

 

बुद्धिः प्रभावस्तेजश्च सत्वमुत्थानमेव च ।

व्यवसायश्च यस्य स्यात्तस्यावृत्ति भयं कुतः ॥ 950

 

Buddhih prabhavastejashcha satvamutthanameva cha ।

Vyavasayashcha yasya syattasyavrutti bhayam kutah ॥

 

For one has brains, thrust, brilliance and enthusiasm to work,

where is the need to have fear about earning for a living?
