अनन्तपारं किल शब्दशास्त्रं स्वल्पं तथायुर्बहवश्च विघ्नाः ।
सारन्ततो ग्राह्यमपास्य
फल्गु हंसैर्यथा क्षीरमिवाऽम्बुमध्यात् ॥ १57१
Anantaparaṁ
kila shabdashastram
svalpam
tathayurbahavashcha vighnah ।
Sarantato grahyamapasya
phalgu hamsairyatha kshiramiva ambumadhyat ॥
Literature
is indeed voluminous and boundless. But human life is short and full of
obstacles. Therefore, one should grasp only the essence, leaving out wasteful
details – just like swans drinking only the milk from the mixture of milk and
water.
यस्मिन्कुले त्वमुत्पन्नो गजस्तत्र न हन्यते ॥ १57२
Shuro asi krutavidyo asi darshaniyo asi
putrakah ।
Yasminkule tvamutpanno gajastatra na
hanyate ॥
Oh, Son, you are brave, well trained, handsome, says mother
fox,
In the race that you are born in,
elephants are not killed.
क्रतौ विवाहे व्यसने
रिपुक्षये यशस्करे कर्मणि मित्रसंग्रहे।
प्रियासु नारीष्वधनेषु बन्धुषु धनव्ययस्तेषु न गण्यते बुधैः ॥ १57३
Kratau vivahe vyasane ripukshaye yashaskare karmani mitrasangrahe
।
Priyasu narishvadhaneshu
bandhushu dhanavyayasteshu na ganyate budhaih ॥
While performing religious rites, conducting
marriage, facing hardship, during losses due to enemy action, in the activities
that earn goodwill, on entertaining of friends, women, helping poor kinsmen,
incurring any expenditure is not really considered by the wise.
सम्पत्तेश्च विपत्तेश्च दैवमेव हि कारणम् ।
इति दैवपरो ध्यायन्न आत्मना न विचेष्टते ॥ १574
Sampatteshcha vipatteshcha daivam eva hi karaṇam ।
Iti daivaparo dhyayanna atmana
na vicheshtate ॥
A fatalist who considers that prosperity and adversity are
decided by fate does not exert himself.
ज्यौतिषं व्यवहारं च
प्रायश्चित्तं चिकित्सितं ।
अजानन् यो नरो
ब्रूयात् साहसं किमतः परम् ॥ १575
Jyotisham vyavaharam cha prayashchttam
chikitsitam ।
Ajanan yo naro bruyat sahasam kimatah param ॥
There is no felony greater than pretending to know astrology,
be a judge, suggesting ways of redemption and practicing medicine without
having enough knowledge in the matter.
आदरेण यथा स्तौति धनवन्तं धनेच्छया ।
तथा चेद् विश्वकर्तारं को न मुच्येत बन्धनात् ॥ १576
Adarena
yatha stauti dhanavantam dhanechchaya ।
Tatha ched vishvakartaraṁ ko
na muchyeta bandhanat ॥
A
person praises with all attention a rich man due to his desire for wealth. If
this is done to the creator of the universe, which person is not freed from the
bondage of worldly existence?
वयं काका वयं काका जल्पन्तीति प्रगे द्विकाः ।
तिमिरारिस्तमोहन्यादिति शङ्कितमानसाः ॥ १577
Vayam kaka vayam kaka
jalpantiti prage dvikah ।
Timiraristamohanyaditi
shankita manasah ॥
At the rise of dawn, crows shout, ‘We are crows, we are crows’
from fear that will be destroyed along with the night because they are black, like many doubt-ridden
people who worry unnecessarily.
अत्यन्तकोपः कटुका च वाणी दरिद्रता च
स्वजनेषु वैरम् ।
नीचप्रसंगः कुलहीनसेवा चिह्नानि देहे
नरकस्थितानाम् ॥ १57८
Atyantakopah katuka cha vani
daridrata svajaneshu vairam ।
Nichaprasangah kulahinaseva chihnani
dehe narakasthitanam ॥
Extreme anger, unpleasant speech, poverty, enmity with one’s
own people, association with mean people and inclination to serve people of low
cadre are characteristics of people who have stayed in hell.
व्रजन्ति न निवर्तन्ते स्रोतांसि सरितां यथा ।
आयुरादाय मर्त्यानां तथा रात्र्यहनी सदा ॥ १579
Vrajanti
na nivartante srotamsi saritam yatha ।
Ayur adaya martyanam tatha ratryahani sada ॥
As river streams flow on and on and not return so also day and
night.
They proceed taking away with them the lives of mortals.
आक्रोशकसमो लोके सुहृदन्यो न विद्यते ।
यस्तु दुष्कृतमादाय सुकृतं स्वं प्रयच्छति ॥ १5८०
Akroshakasamo loke suhrudanyo na vidyate ।
Yastu dushkrutamadaya sukrutam svam prayachchati ॥
In this world
there is not to be found a friend of an abusive person. For he takes
away all
demerits and gives back in their place all the goodness he possesses.
अमितगुणोऽपि
पदार्थो दोषेणैकेन निन्दितो भवति ।
निखिलरसायनमहितो गन्धेनोग्रेण लशुन इव ॥ १5८१
Amitaguno
api padartho doshenaikena nindito bhavati ।
Nikhilarasayanamahito
gandhenogrena lashuna iva ॥
Despite having
immeasurable merits, a person becomes censurable on account of a single defect
just like garlic which in spite of being esteemed among medicines is ill famed
because of its strong smell.
अज्ञानं कारणं न स्याद्वियोगो यदि कारणम् ।
शोको दिनेषु गच्छत्सु वर्धतामपयाति किम् ॥ १5८२
Ajnanam karanam
na syad viyogo yadi karanam ।
Shoko dineshu gachchatsu
vardhatam apayati kim ॥
If separation is the cause for sorrow and
not ignorance,
then why after time has passed, sorrow
goes away?
आत्मनो
मुखदोषेण बध्यन्ते शुकसारिकाः ।
बकास्
तत्र न बध्यन्ते मौनं सर्वार्थसाधनम् ॥ १5८३
Atmano
Mukhadoshena badhyante shukasarikah ।
Bakas tatra na badhyante maunam
sarvarthasadhanam ॥
The
parrots and the grackle birds are caged because they utter words.
Stupid
herons go scot-free. For, silence is the instrument to achieve all goals.
अम्भसा भिद्यते सेतुस्तथा मन्त्रोऽप्यरक्षितः ।
पैशुन्यात् भिद्यते स्नेहः वाचा भिद्येन कातरः ॥ १5८4
Ambhasa bhidyate setustatha mantro apyarakshitah
।
Paishunyat bhidyate snehah vacha bhidyena
katarah ॥
Constant pressure of water will cause a dam that is not maintained
to breach.
Unguarded and wicked speech will break friendships.
वरं न राज्यं न कुराजराज्यं वरं न मित्रं न कुमित्रमित्रं
।
वरं न शिष्यो न कुशिष्यशिष्यो वरं न दारा न कुदारदाराः
॥ १5८5
Varam na rajyam na kurajarajyam varam na mitram na
kumitramitram ।
Varam na shishyo na kushishyashishyo varam na dara na
kudaradarah ॥
It is better to be without a country than be in
a country ruled by a hopeless Ruler. It is better to be friendless than have a worthless
person as a friend. It is better to be without a disciple than having a
hopeless disciple. It is better to be without a wife than be with an ill-mannered
wife.
कामः सर्वात्मना हेयः स चेद्धातुं न शक्यते ।
स्वभार्यां प्रति कर्तव्यः सैव तस्य हि भेषजम् ॥ १5८6
Kamah sarvatmana heyah
sa cheddhātum na shakyate ।
Svabharyam prati kartavyah
saiva tasya hi bheshajam ॥
Passion should be avoided with whole
heart. If it is not possible then it
should be indulged only with one’s own
wife. That is the best remedy.
स
धर्मो यो दयायुक्तः सर्वप्राणिहितप्रदः ।
स
एवोत्तारेण शक्तो भवाम्भोधेः सुदुस्तरात् ॥ १5८7
Sa
dharmo yo dayaayuktah sarvapraaNihitapradah ।
Sa
evottareNa shakto bhavaambhodheh sudustaraat ॥
That
which is compassionate and to the benefit of all beings is indeed dharma. Such
dharma is the only one capable of enabling one to go through the ocean of
worldly existence.
हारं वक्षसि केनापि दत्तमज्ञेन मर्कटः ।
लोढि जिघ्रति संक्षिप्य करोत्युन्नतमासनम् ॥ १5८८
Haram vakshasi kenapi dattamajnena markatah ।
Loddhi jighrati samkshipya karotyunnatamasanam ॥
One should not put a necklace on an ignorant monkey.
It will lick it, smell it, bite it and ultimately sit on it.
भयं प्रमत्तस्य वनेष्वपि स्याद्यतः स आस्ते सहषट्सपत्नः
।
जितेन्द्रियस्यात्मरतेर्बुधस्य गृहाश्रमः किं नु करोत्यवद्यम्
॥ १5८9
Bhayam pramattasya vaneshvapi
syadyatah sa aste sahashtsapatnah ।
Jitondryasyatmaraterbusdhasya
gruhashramah kim nu karotyavadyam ॥
One who is careless and not able to get over
the six enemies - desire, anger, greed, arrogance, delusion and hatred even if
he dwells in forests, is likely to fall prey to them. A wise man, who is fully conscious of himself
and has control over his sensory organs, will not fall prey even while leading
a life of a householder.
लुब्धमर्थेन गृह्णीयात् स्तब्धमञ्जलि कर्मणा ।
मूर्खं छन्दानुरोधेन याथातथ्येन पण्डितम् ॥ १59०
Lubdham
arthena gruhniyat stabdhamanjali karmana ।
Murkham chandanurodhena yathatathyena
panditam ॥
It is advisable to gratify a covetous person by money, a stern
person by humility, an ignorant by fulfilment of his desires and a wise person
by speaking the truth.
