अन्यथैव हि सौहार्दं भवेत् स्वच्छान्तरात्मनः ।

प्रवर्ततेऽन्यथा वाणी शाठ्योपहतचेतसः ॥ १45१

Anyathaiva hi sauhardam bhavet svachchantaratmanah l
Pravartate anyatha vani shattyopahatachetasah ll

 

The friendship of the pure minded person is very different from that of a deceitful person. Deceitful person’s speech is in one direction and action in the opposite direction.

 

भिक्षाशनं भवनमायतनैकदेशः शय्या भुवः परिजनो निजदेहभारः ।
वासश्च जीर्णपटखण्डनिबद्धकन्था हा हा तथापि विषयान्न जहाति चेतः ॥ १45२

 

Bhikshashanam bhavanamayatanaikadeshah shayya bhuvah parijano nijadehabharah l

Vasashcha jirnapatakhandanibaddhakantha ha ha tathaapi vishayanna jahati chetah ll

 

Food by begging, home is where one is sitting, servants are one’s own body, clothes are made of rags. But still, the mind is not giving up desires for objects!

 

मज्जन्नपि पयोराशौ लब्ध्वा सर्पावलम्बनम् ।
न मुञ्चति न चादत्ते तथा मुग्धोऽस्मि सम्प्रति ॥ १45३

 

Majjann api payorshau labdhva sarpavalambanam l
Na munchati na chadatte tatha mugdho asmi samprati ll

When sunk in deep waters and having obtained the support of a serpent,

one can neither hold on to it nor let go of it. I am in that predicament now.

 

प्रत्याख्याने च दाने च सुखदुःखे प्रियाप्रिये ।
आत्मौपम्येन पुरुषः प्रमाणम् अधिगच्छति ॥ १454

 

Pratyakhyane cha dane cha sukhaduḥkhe priyapriye l
Atmaupamyena purushah pramanam adhigachchati ll

 

By treating others on par with oneself, in speech, in giving,

In happiness &sorrow, in likes & dislikes, a person attains peace of mind.

 

ज्ञानेन पुंसां सकलार्थसिद्धिर्ज्ञानादृते काचन नार्थसिद्धिः ।

ज्ञानस्य मत्वेति गुणान्कदाचिज्ज्ञानं न मुञ्चन्ति महानुभावाः ॥ १455

 

Jnanena pumsam sakalarthasiddhirjnarnadrute kachina narthasiddhih |

Jnanasya matveti gunankadachijjnanam na munchati mahanubhavah ||

 

Men can achieve all that is desired through knowledge. Nothing is achieved without knowledge. Knowing qualities of knowledge, great men never give up efforts to gain knowledge.
