विषस्य विषयाणां हि दृश्यते महदन्तरम् ।
उपभुक्तं विषं हन्ति विषयाः स्मरणादपि ॥ १49१
Vishasya vishayaanam hi drushyate mahadantaram l
upbhuktam visham hanti vishayah smaranadapi ll
There is a big difference between visha (poison)
and vishaya (object of one’s desire). The first kills on consumption, but the
latter consumes one even when one dwells on it.
असंवृताकारतया भिन्नमन्त्रस्य भूपते: ।
सकृच्छिद्रघटस्येव न तिष्ठत्युदयोदकम् ॥ १49२
Asamvrutākarataya bhinnamantrasya bhupateh l
Sakruchchidraghatasyeva na tishtatyudayodakam
ll
By not keeping a careful guard over his facial
expressions, the state secrets of a king get divulged and hence just as a pot
with a single hole holds no water, he cannot hope for any prosperous reign.
उद्योगिनः करालम्बं
करोति कमलालया ।
अनुद्योगिकरालम्बं करोति कमलाग्रजा ॥ १49३
Udyoginah karalambam
karoti kamalalaya l
Anudyogikaralambaṃ karoti kamalagraja ll
Goddess of wealth Lakshmi
gives a supporting hand to industrious persons.
Lazy persons get the
support of Lakshmi’s lazy elder sister.
असुखैश्च विनालापो गुह्यस्य कथनं तथा ।
विपद्विमोक्षणं चैव मित्रतायाः फलत्रयम् ॥ १494
Asukhaishca vinalapo guhyasya kathanam tatha l
vipadvimokshanam chaiva mitratayah
phalatrayam ll
Chats without any kind of unpleasantness communication
of one’s secrets
and help to escape if one falls into danger are three good
results of friendship.
छिद्रं मर्म च वीर्यं च सर्वं वेत्ति निजो रिपुः ।
दहत्यन्तर्गतश्चैव शुष्कं वृक्षम् इवानलः ॥ १495
Chidram marma cha viryam cha sarvam vetti nijo ripuh l
Dahatyantargatashchaiva shushkam
vruksham ivanalah ll
An enemy from one’s own tribe knows every defect,
weakness, bravery
and being inside he consumes one like fire burns a
dry tree.
गाढं गुणवती विद्या
न मुदे विनयं विना ।
मूर्खतापि मुदे भुयान्महत्सु विनयान्विता ॥ १496
Gaddham
gunavati vidya na mude vinayam vina l
Murkhatapi
mude bhuyanmahatsu vinayavantita ll
Even deep learning will give no pleasure if not
accompanied by courteousness.
Great people who are courteous are happy even if
not fully learned.
आदौ तन्व्यो बृहन्मध्या विस्तारिण्यः पदे पदे ।
यायिन्यो न निवर्तन्ते सतां मैत्र्यः सरित्समाः ॥ १497
Adau
tanvyo bruhanmadhya vistarinyaḥ pade pade ।
Yayinyo na nivartante satam
maitryah saritsamah ॥
The
friendship of the pious is like a river, shallow in the beginning, deep in the
middle, widening at each step and ever flowing and never ceasing.
म्रियामाणं मृतं बन्धुं शोचन्ते परिदेविनः ।
आत्मानं नानुशोचन्ति कालेन कवलीकृतम् ॥ १49८
Mriyamanam mrutam bandhum shochante paridevinah
।
Atmanam nanushochanti kalena kavalikrutam ॥
People grieve over relatives who are dead or on deathbeds. They
don’t grieve
over the fact that they themselves are certain to go into the jaws
of time.
चलत्येकेन पादेन तिष्ठत्येकेन बुद्धिमान् ।
नासमीक्ष्य परं स्थानं पूर्वमायतनं त्यजेत् ॥ १499
Chalatyekena padena tishtatyekena buddhiman ।
Nasamikshya param sthanam purvamayatanaṃ
tyajet ॥
A wise man moves one foot with the other firmly rooted on the ground.
Without ensuring a stable place to
land never leave the present.
रहस्यभेदो याञ्चा च निष्ठूर्यं चलचित्तता ।
क्रोधो निःसत्यता द्यूतमेतन्मित्रस्य दूषणम् ॥ १5००
Rahasyabhedo yancha cha nishturyam chalachittata ।
Krodho nissatyata dyutametanmitrasya dushanam ॥
Secret division, always seeking,
over sensititivity, unsteady mind,
Anger, falsehood, drinking are
signs of friendship going bad.
