ये वै भेदनशीलास्तु सकामा निस्त्रपाश्शठा: ।

ये पापा इति विख्यातास्संवासे परिगर्हिता: ॥ १56१

 

Ye vai bhedanashilastu sakama nistrapashshatthah ।

Ye papa iti vikhyaatassmvase parigarhitah ॥

 

Those who are known to indulge in dividing people, selfish in their actions, shameless in their behaviour, of fraudulent nature and those who are well-known as criminals are very much unfit to be dwelling with.

 

ज्ञानेन पूंसां सकलार्थसिद्धिर्ज्ञानादृते काचन नार्थसिद्धिः ।

ज्ञानस्य मत्वेति गुणान्कदाचिज्ज्ञानं न मुञ्चन्ति महानुभावाः ॥ १56२

 

Jnanena pumsam sakalarthasiddhirjnanadrute kachana narthasiddhih ।

Jnasya matveti gunankadachijjnanam na munchanti mahanubhavah ॥

 

Man can achieve all desires with knowledge. Nothing is achieved without knowledge. Knowing the qualities of such knowledge, great people never give up trying to gain knowledge.

कायः संनिहितापायः सम्पदः पदमापदाम् ।
समागमाः सापगमाः सर्वमुत्पादि भङ्गुरम् ॥ १56३

 

Kayah samnihitapayah sampadah padamapadam ।
Samagamah sapagamah sarvam utpadi bhanguram ॥

 

The body is liable for decay, prosperity is succeeded by adversity, unions are followed by separations, whatever is created is fragile.

 

तावदाश्रीयते लक्ष्म्या तावदस्य स्थिरं यशः ।

पुरुषस्तावदेवासौ यावन्मानान्न हीयते ॥ १564

 

Tavadashriyate lakshmya tavadasya sthiram yashah ।

Purushastavadevasau yavanmananna hiyate ॥

 

One can accumulate wealth, one can have established fame, but one is considered

a man of substance only so long as one commands the respect of society.

 

अवज्ञात्रुटितं प्रेम नवीकर्तुं क ईश्वरः ।

सन्धिं न यान्ति स्फुटितं लाक्षालेपेन मौक्तिकम् ॥ १565

 

Avajnatrutitam prema navikartum ka ishvarah ।

Sandhim na yanti sphutitam lakshalepena mauktikam ॥

 

Who is able to make good the love broken due to insult?

A broken pearl cannot be joined by applying a layer of lac.

 

हतं ज्ञानं क्रियाहीनं हतश्चाज्ञानतो नरः ।
हतं निर्णायकं सैन्यं स्त्रियो नष्टा ह्यभर्तृकाः ॥ १566

 

Hatam jnanam kriyahinam hatashchajnanato narah ।

Hatam nirnayakam sainyam striyo nashta hyabhartrukah ॥

 

Knowledge, if not brought into use gets lost, a person gets destroyed by the lack of knowledge, an army gets destroyed without a proper leader and women are lost without protectors.

 

परेषां यदसूयेत न तत् कुर्यात् स्वयं नरः ।
यो ह्यसूयुस्तथायुक्तः सोऽवहासं नियच्छति ॥ १567

Paresham yadasuyeta na tat kuryat svayam narah ।

Yo hyasuyustathayukatah so avahasam niyachchati ॥

 

 

One should not out of envy indulge in actions which one criticises of other people.

Such a person would indeed face ridicule from others.

 

उत्सवे व्यसने युद्धे दुर्भिक्षे राष्ट्रविप्लवे ।
राजद्वारे श्मशाने च यस्तिष्ठति स बान्धवः ॥ १56८

 

Utsave vyasane yuddhe durbhikshe rashtraviplave ।
Rājadvare shmashane cha yastishtati sa bandhavah ॥

 

He is a true friend who does not forsake us in time of need, misfortune,

famine, or war, in a king’s court, or at the crematorium.

 

धन्या बधिरा अन्धास्स एव जीवन्ति मानुषे लोके l
न शृण्वन्ति पिशुनजनं खलानाम् ऋद्धिं न प्रेक्षन्ते ll १569

 

Dhanya badhira andhassa eva jivanti manushe loke ।
Na shrunvanti pishunajanam khalanam ruddhim na prekshante ॥

Blessed are those in this world who are deaf and blind, for, they do not have to

listen to malicious words of the wicked or see the prosperity of the evil ones.

 

न तथा तप्यते विद्धः पुमान्बाणैः सुमर्मगैः l

यथा तुदन्ति मर्मस्था ह्यसतां परुषेषवः ll १57०

 

Na tatha tapyate viddhah pumanbanaih sumarmagaih l

Yatha tudanti marmastha hyasatam parusheshavah ll

 

Even though an arrow hits one’s weak spot, one does not feel as much pain as much as one inflicted by the verbal attack of the wicked people on one’s Achilles Heel.
