अकरोः किमु नेत्रशोणिमानं किमकार्षीः करपल्लवावरोधम् ।

कलहं किमधाः क्रुधा रसज्ञे हितमर्थं न विदन्ति दैवदष्टाः ॥ 1046

 

Akaroḥ kimu netrashonimanam kimakarshih karapallavavarodham ।
Kalahaṃ kimadhah krudha rasajne hitamartham na vidanti daivadashtah ॥ 

 

You, who can appreciate taste, did you redden your eyes and offer resistance with your tender hands or quarrel? Those who are smitten by adverse fate, are not concerned with their own welfare.

 

जिह्वे प्रमाणं जानीहि भाषणे भोजनेऽपि च ।
अत्युक्तिरतिभुक्तिश्च सत्यं प्राणापहारिणी ॥ 1047

 

Jihve pramanam janahi bhashane bhojane api cha ।

Atyuktiratibhuktishcha satyam pranapaharini ॥

Hey tongue, know your limitations while speaking and eating.

Excessive talking as well as over-eating can result in death.

 

क्रोधो हि शत्रुः प्रथमो नराणाम् देहस्थितो देहविनाशनाय ।
यथा स्थितः काष्ठगतो हि वह्निः स एव वह्निः दहते शरीरम् ॥ 1048

 

Krodho hi shatruh prathamo naranam dehasthito dehavinashaya ।

Yath sthitah kashtagato hi vahnih sa eva vahnih dahate shariram ॥

Anger is foremost enemy of man which inherently resides within oneself only to

destroy him, just like fire which is kindled by a piece of wood ends up burning the piece.

 

पुरानमित्येव न साधु सर्वम् न चापि काव्यं नवमित्यवद्यम् ।

सन्तः परीक्ष्यान्यतरद् भजन्ते मूढः परप्रत्ययनेय बुद्धिः ॥ 1049

 

Puranamiteva na sadhu sarvam na chapi kavyam navamityavadyam ।

Santaha parikshyanyatarad bhajante mudhaha parapratyayaneya buddhihi ॥

 

All that is old is not wisdom, all that is new is not foolish. Wise People

choose after careful consideration, fools depend on others’ opinions.

 

कृतस्य करणं नास्ति मृतस्य मरणं तथा ।
गतस्य शोचना नास्ति ह्येतद् वेदविदां मतम् ॥ 1050

 

Krutasya Karanam nasti mrutasya maranam tatha |

Gatasya shochana nasti hyetad vedavidam matam ||

What has been done cannot be undone. What is dead cannot die again. What has been lost should not be repented. This is the opinion of scholars.

 

 अन्तस्तृष्णोपतप्तानां दावदाहमयं जगत् ।

भवत्यखिलजन्तूनां यदन्तस्तद्बहिःस्थितम्॥ 1041

Antastrushnopataptanaam davadahamayam jagat ।
Bhavatyakhilajantunam yadantastadbahihsthitam ॥

For those whose inside is burning with greed; the whole world is like wild fire.

For everyone what is inside is reflected outside as well.

 

अनिर्वेद: श्रियो मूलं अनिर्वेद: परं सुखं ।

अनिर्वेदो हि सततं सर्वार्तेषु प्रवर्तक: ॥ 1042

 

Anirveda: shriyo mulam anirvedah param sukham ।

anirvedo hi satatam sarvarteshu pravartaka: ॥

 

Self confidence is the source of well-being, Self confidence gives

ultimate comfort in life. It is always the motivator of all good intentions.

 

तैलाद्रक्षेत् जलाद्रक्षेत् रक्षेत् शिथिलबन्धनात् ।
मूर्खहस्ते न दातव्यं एवं वदति पुस्तकम् ॥ 1043

 

Tailadrakshet jaladrakshet rakshet shitilabandhanat ।

Murkhahaste na datavyam vadati pustakam ॥

Protect me from oil. Protect me from water. Protect me from loose binding.

Do not hand me to a fool, requests a book of its owner.

 

यस्माच्च प्रियमिच्छेत्तु तस्य ब्रूयात्सदा प्रियम् ।
व्याधो मृगवधं कर्तुं गीतं गायति सुस्वरम् ॥ 1044 

 

Yasmachcha priyamicchettu tasya bruyatsada priyam ।

Vyadho mrugavadham kartum gitam gayati susvaram ॥

 

Speak sweet words that please the person from whom you expect a favor.

To hunt for a deer, the hunter sings a melodious song first.

 

नास्ति माया सम पसो नास्ति योगात् परम् बलम् ।
न हि ज्ञानात् परो बन्धुर् नहम्कारात् परो रिपु ॥ 1045

Nasti maya sama paso nasti yogat param balam ।
Na hi jnanat paro bandhur nahamkarat paro ripu ॥

 

There is no bondage equal to illusion, no strength bigger than yoga.
There is no friend better than knowledge and no enemy worse than boosted ego.

 सभां वा न प्रवेष्ठव्यं वक्तव्यं वा समञ्जसं ।

अब्रुवन् विब्रुवन् वापि नरो भवति किल्बिषी ॥ 1036

 

Sabham va na praveshtyam vaktavyam va samanjasam ।

Abruvan vibruvan vapi naro bhavati kilbishi ॥

 

One should refrain from being a part of the meeting; if one is a part, speaking the truth is the only option. Those who either don't speak up misrepresent are both defaulters of highest order.

 

अधिगत्य गुरोर्ज्ञानम् छात्रेभ्यो वितरन्ति ये ।
विद्यावात्सल्यनिधयः शिक्षका मम दैवतम् ॥ 1037

 

Adhigatya gurorjnanam chatrebhyo vittaranti ye ।

Vidyavatsalyanidhayah shikshaka mama deivatam ॥

Teachers are those who master knowledge from their teachers and then impart it to students. They are the treasure houses of knowledge and love. I consider such teachers as divine beings and worship them.

 

धर्म यो बाधते धर्मा न स धर्मः कुधर्मकः ।
अविरोधात्तु यो धर्मः स धर्मः सत्यविक्रम ॥ 1038

 

Dharma yo badhate dharma na sa dhramah kudharmakah ।

Avirodhattu yo dharmah sa dharmah satyavikrama ॥

That faith which opposes another faith is not a real faith. It is fake.

That faith which believes in univeral tolerance is the real faith.

 

श्वा यति दशति मनुष्यान् न ते जनास्तं पुनः प्रतिदशन्ति ।

यद्याक्रोशति नीचो न सज्जनस्तं वदति किञ्चित् ॥ 1039

 

Shva yati dashati manushyan na te janastam punah pratidashanti ।

Yadyakroshanti neecho na sajjanastam vadati kinchit ॥

 

When a dog bites a man, the man does not bite the dog in return.

When a mean person maligns a noble person, the noble one does not retaliate.

 

क्षमा बलमशक्तानां शक्तानां भूषणं क्षमा ।
क्षमा वशीकृतिर्लोके क्षमया किं न सिध्यति ॥ 1040

 

Kshama balamakshatanam shaktanam bhushanam kshama ।

Kshma vashikrutirloke kshamaya kim na sidhyati ॥

 

Ability to forgive is the strength of the weak. It is the ornament of the mighty. In

this world where it subdues one, what cannot be accomplished by forgiveness?

 कालाशी स्वल्पसन्तुष्टः सुनिद्रः शीघ्रचेतनः ।

प्रभुभक्तश्च शूरश्च ज्ञातव्याः षट् शुनोगुणाः ॥ 1031

 

Kalashi svalpasantushtah sunidrah shighrachetanah ।

Prabhubhaktashcha shurashcha jnatavyah shat shunugunah ॥

 

A dog has six lessons for humans. Eating only when food is available, contentment with little, sound sleep, instant wakefulness, total devotion to the master and bravery

 

देहे पातिनि का रक्षा यशो रक्ष्यमपातवत् ।

नरः पातितकायोऽपि यशःकायेन जीवति ॥ 1032

 

Dehe patini ka raksha yasho rakshyamapatavat ।

Narah patitakayo api yashah kayena jivati ॥

 

Why protect the body that is bound to fall off, protect the honor from falling.

Even when the body has fallen, the being lives through the person’s honor.

 

धारणाद्धर्ममित्याहुःधर्मो धारयते प्रजाः ।

यस्याद्धारणसंयुक्तं स धर्म इति निश्चयः ॥ 1033

Dharanamityahuh dharmo dharayate prajah ।

Yasyaddharanasamyuktam sa dharma iti nishchayah ॥

 

The word "dharma" is derived from "dharana." It is "dharma" which holds

society together. If something is able to hold people together it is no doubt dharma

 

तृणानि नोन्मूलयति प्रभञ्जनो मृदूनि नीचैः प्रणतानि सर्वतः ।
स्वभाव एवोन्नतचेतसामयं महान्महत्स्वेव करोति विक्रमम् ॥ 1034

 

Trunani nonmulayati prabhanjano mruduni nichaih pranatani sarvatah ।

Svabhava evonnatachetasamayam mahanmahatsveva karoti vikramam ॥

A strong wind will never uproot low lying submissive grass. Those who

are powerful fight and win over other strong worthy opponents not weaklings.

 

गुरवो बहवः सन्ति शिष्यवित्तापहारकाः ।

दुर्लभः स गुरुर्लोके शिष्यचिन्तापहारकः ॥ 1035

 

Guravo bahavah santi shishyavittapaharakah ।

Durlabhah sa guruloke shishyachintapaharakah ॥

 

There are many teachers who loot the money of their disciples,

but teachers who remove doubts of their disciples are rare.

 परिवर्तिनि संसारे मृतः को वा न जायते।

स जातो येन जातेन याति वंशः समुन्नतिम् ॥ 1026

 

Parivartini samsare mrutah ko va na jayate ।

Sa jato yena jatena yati vamshah samunnatim ॥

 

In this world of constant change, who does not take birth after one dies?

But the one who takes his clan to greater heights is the one really born.

शान्तितुल्यं तपो नास्ति तोषान्न परमं सुखम्।

नास्ति तृष्णापरो व्याधिर्न च धर्मो दयापरः॥ 1027

 

Shantitulyam tapo nasti toshanna paramam sukham ।

Nasti trushnaparo vyadhirna dharmo dayaparah ॥

 

There is no penance equal to peace, no happiness equal to joy,

no disease equal to thirst for things and no Dharma equal to kindness.

 

अहन्यहनि भूतानि गच्छन्तीह यमालयम् ।

शेषाः स्थावरमिच्छन्ति किमाश्चर्यंमत: परम् ॥ 1028

 

Ahanyahani bhutani gachchantiha yamalayam ।

Sheshah sthavaramichchanti kimashcharyamatah param ॥

 

Day by day all living beings go to Yamraj's house after dying.

Wonder why then those who survive wish for immortality?

वदनं प्रसादसदनं सदयं हृदयं सुधामुचो वाचः ।
करणं परोपकरणं येषां केषां न ते वन्द्याः ॥ 1029

 

Vadanam prasadasadanam sadayam hrudayam sudhamucho vachah |

Karanam paropakaranam yesham kesham n ate vandyah ||

Who will not honor such a person who has a smile on his face,

has compassion in his heart, whose speech is sweet and is always helpful.

 

राजा राष्ट्रकृतं पापं राज्ञः पापं पुरोहितः ।
भर्ता च स्त्रीकृतं पापं शिष्यपापं गुरुः तथा ॥ 1030

 

Raja rashtrakrutam papam rajnah papam purohitah ।

Bhartam cha strikrutam papam shishyapapam guruh tatha ॥

A king is culpable for sins committed by the nation. The adviser is culpable of sins committed by the king. Husband is responsible for his wife's sins. A teacher is responsible for the sins of his pupil.
