अहान्यस्तमयान्तानि उदयान्ता च शर्वरी ।

सुखस्यान्तः सदा दुःखं दुःखस्यान्तः सदा सुखम् ॥ १२36

 

Ahanyastamayantani udayanta ca sharvari l
Sukhasyantah sada dukham dukhasyantah sada sukham ll

Days end with the Sun’s setting and nights with the Sun’s rising. The end of

pleasure is always sorrow and the end of sorrow is always pleasure.

 

नहि तद्विद्यते किञ्चिद्यदर्थेन न सिध्यति।
यत्नेन मतिमांस्तस्मादर्थमेकं प्रसाधयेत् ॥ १२37

Nahi tadvidyate kiṃchidyadarthena na siddhyati l
Yatnena matimamstasmadarthamekaṃ prasadhayet ll

 

There is nothing that is not possible to attain through wealth.

An intelligent man therefore should strive to earn wealth.

 

स बन्धुर् यो विपन्नानाम् आपद्-उद्धरण-क्षमः ।
न तु भीत-परित्राण-वस्तूपालम्भ-पण्डितः ॥ १२38

 

Sa bandhur yo vipannanam apaduddharanakshamah l
Na tu bhita paritrana vastūpalambha panditah ll

 

He is a friend of the afflicted who protects them from calamities and not one,

who is an expert in condemning a thing badly done or omitted to be done.

 

विवेकः सह संपत्या विनयो विध्या सह ।

प्रभुत्वम् प्रक्षयोभेदम् चिन्हमेतन्महात्मनाम् ॥ १२39

 

Vivekah saha sampatya vinayo vidhyA saha l

Prabhutvam prakshayobhedam chinhametanmahatmanam ll

 

Great people may be recognized from these signs: discretion along

with wealth, humility with scholarship and power without discrimination.

 

न स्वल्पस्य कृते भूरि नाशयेन्मतिमान्नरः ।
एतदेवात्र पाण्डित्यं यत्स्वल्पाद्भूरि रक्षणम् ॥ १२4०

 

Na svalpasya krute bhuri nashayenmatimannarah l
Etadevatra pandityam yatsvalpadbhūri rakshanam ll

 

An intelligent man does not destroy much for the sake of less.

If one can lose only a little and save much, it is the sign of intelligence.

 कालातिक्रमणं वृत्तेर्यो न कुर्वीत भूपतिः ।

कदाचित् तं न मुञ्चन्ति भर्त्सिता अपि सेवकाः ॥ १२3१

 

Kalatikramanam vrutteryo na kurvita bhupatih ।
Kadachit tam na munchanti bhartsita api sevakah ॥

 

Servants never leave a king who pays them in time,

even if they are treated rudely by him.

 

अर्थानां अर्जने दुःखं अर्जिनानां च रक्षणे ।

आये दुःखं व्यये दुःखं धिक् अर्थाः कष्टसंश्रयाः ॥ १२3२

 

Arthanam arjane dukham arjinanam cha rakshane ।

Aye dukham vyaye dukham dhik arthah kashtasamshrayah ॥

 

One has to suffer to earn money and suffer to protect it.

Fie on wealth which causes such trouble to earn and to spend it.

 

बुद्धि: प्रभाव  तेजश्च सत्वमुत्थानमेव च ।

व्यवसायश्च यस्यास्ति तस्य वृत्तिभयं कुतः ॥ १२33

Buddhihi prabhav tejashcha satvamutthanameva cha l
Vyavasayashcha yasyasti tasya vruttibhayam kutah ll

How can a person who is intelligent, influential, powerful, is always enthusiastic for growth and is already engaged in a business or profession, be fearful of unemployment?

 

केयूर न भूषयन्ति पुरुषम् हारा न चन्द्रोज्वला

न स्नानं न विलेपनं न कुसुमं नालन्क्रुता मूर्धजा:।

वान्येका सां अलन्करोति पुरुषम् या संस्कृता धार्यते क्षीयन्ते

खलु भूषणानि सततम् वाग्भूषणं भूषणम् ॥ १२34

 

Keyura na bushayanti purusham hara na chandrojvala

na snanam na vilepanam na kusumam nalankruta murdhajah l

vanyeka sam alankaroti purusham ya sanskruta dharyate kshIyante

khalu bhushanani satatam vagbhushanam bhushanam ll

 

Armlets do not beautify a person, neither do necklaces bright as the moon,

bathing, applying scents, flowers, nor well groomed hair. Well cultured speech thoroughly adorns a man. All decorations fade away slowly, Adornment of speech remains.

 

गोत्रस्थिति न मुञ्चति सदा सन्नतिमाश्रिताः ।

उदन्वन्तश्च सन्तश्च महासत्त्वतया तथा ॥ १२35

 

Gotrasthiti na munchati sada sannatimashritah l

Udanvantashcha santashcha mahasattvataya tatha ll

 

Noble persons remain firm against all odds like a mountain to protect their dynasties.

Their character remains unchanged like that of oceans and saints.

 सदाचारेण सर्वेषाम् शुद्धं भवति मानसम् ।

निर्मलं च विशुद्धं च मानसं देवमन्दिरम्  ॥ 1226

Sadacharena sarvesham shuddham bhavati manasam ।
Nirmalam cha vishuddham cha manasam devamandiram ॥

By doing good deeds all the time with everyone, mind gets purified. Such a pure mind, devoid of any bad thoughts is a temple in itself.

 

अहिं  नृपं  च  शार्दूलं  वृद्धं  च  बालकं  तथा ।

परश्वानं  च  मूर्खं  च  सप्त  सुप्तान्न बोधयेत  ॥ 1227

 

Ahim nrupam cha shardulam vruddham cha balakam tatha ।
Parashvanam cha murkham cha sapta suptanna bodhayet ॥

Snake, king, tiger. aged person, child, dog belonging to someone else and

an idiot, all these seven if found asleep, should not be woken up.

 

सानन्दं सदनं सुताश्च सुधियः कान्ता प्रियभाषिणी सन्मित्रं सधनं स्वयोषिति रतिः चाज्ञापराः सेवकाः ।

आतिथ्यं शिवपूजनं प्रतिदिनं मिष्टान्नपानं गृहे साधोः सङ्गमुपासते हि सततं धन्यो गृहस्थाश्रमः ॥ 1228

 

Sanandam sadanam sutashcha sudhiyah kantaa priyabhashini

sanmitram sadhanam svayoshiti ratih chajnaparah sevakaah ।

Atithyam shivapujanam pratidinam mishtannapanam gruhe

sadhoh sangamupasate hi satatam dhanyo gruhasthaashramah ॥

 

Joyful home, intelligent children, wife speaking pleasing words, good friends, enough wealth, liking for one’s wife, dutiful servants, honored guests, daily worship of Shiva, wholesome food at home, attending to holy company – with all these a householder’s life is blessed indeed.

 

चातक धूमसमूहं दृष्ट्वा मा धाव वारिधरबुद्ध्या ।

इह हि भविष्यति भवतो नयनयुगादेव वारिणां पूरः ॥ 1229

 

Chataka dhumasamuham drushtva ma dhava varidharabudhdya ।

Iha hi bhavishyati bhavato nayanayugadeva varinaam purah ॥

 

Hey! Chataka, do not run after seeing clusters of smoke, thinking that they are

rain-bearing clouds. Not only will you not get water, but your eyes will start watering.

 

भिन्नस्वरमुखवर्णः शङ्कितदृष्टिः समुत्पतिततेजाः ।
भवति हि पापं कृत्वा स्वकर्मसन्त्रासितः पुरुषः ॥ १२3०

 

Bhinnasvaramukhavarnah shankitadrushtih samutpatitatejah ।
Bhavati hi papam krutva svakarmasantrasitah purushah ॥

 

A man having perpetrated an evil deed is alarmed at his own act, becomes one whose tone is altered, face changes colour, who looks suspicious and whose lustre is gone.
