इदमेव हि पाण्डित्यं चातुर्यमिदमेव हि ।
इदमेव सुबुद्धित्वमायादल्पतरो व्ययः ॥ 821

Idameva hi pandityam chaturyamidameva hi ।
Idameva subuddhitvamayadalpataro vyayah ॥

 

This alone is erudition, this alone is cleverness,

this alone is good intellect– expense less than revenue.

 

कामः क्रोधस्तथा लोभो देहे तिष्ठन्ति तस्कराः ।
ते  मुष्णान्ति  जगत्सर्वं  तस्माज्जाग्रत  जाग्रत ॥ 822

 

Kamah krodhastatha lobho dehe tishtanti taskarah ।
Te mushnanti jagatsarvam tasmajjagrat jagrat ॥

Desire, anger and greed stay like thieves in the bodies of all human beings and cloud their entire world. Beware, wake up, wake up from the stupor.

 

एकः परगृहं गच्छेद् द्वितीयेन तु मन्त्रयेत् ।

बहुभिः समरं कुर्यादित्ययं शास्त्रनिर्णयः ॥ 823

 

Ekah paragruham gachched dvitiyena tu mantrayet ।

Bahubhih samara kuryadiyayam shastranirnayah ॥

 

Go to someone’s house alone, consult with second person, go on a war

with many people on your side, this is what Sastras have concluded.

 

मृगमीनसज्जनानां तृणजलसन्तोषविहितवृत्तिनाम् ।

लुब्धकधीवरपिशुना निष्कारणवैरिणो जगति ॥ 824

 

Mrugameenasajjananam trunajalasantoshavihitavruttinam ।

Lubdhakadhivarapishuna nishkaranavairino jagati ॥

 

The deer, fish and good people subsist on grass, water and contentment.

Yet, a hunter, fisherman and a backbiter treat them as enemies for no reason.

 

ज्ञातिभिर्वण्टयते नैव चोरेणापि न नीयते ।

दाने नैव क्षयं याति विद्यारत्नं महाधनम् ॥ 825

 

Jnatibhirvantayate naiva chorenapi na neeyate l

Daane naiva kshayam yati vidyaratnam mahadhanam ll

 

It cannot be apportioned among relatives, it cannot be taken by thieves

and by sharing does not decrease, the great jewel of knowledge.
