देशकालौ समासाद्य विक्रमेत विचक्षणः ।

देशकालव्यतीतो हि विक्रमो निष्फलो भवेत् ॥ 876

 

Deshakalau samasadya vikrameta vichakshanah ।

Deshakalavyatito hi vikramo nishphalo bhavet ॥

 

A wiseman should display his prowess considering the time and place.

If these are not favourable, his prowess becomes useless.

 

आपदां कथितः पन्था इन्द्रियाणामसंयमः ।

तज्जयः संपदां मार्गो येनेष्टं तेन गम्यताम् ॥ 877

 

Apadam kathitah pantha indriyanamasamyamah ।

Tajjayah sampadam margo yeneshtam tena gamyatam ॥

 

Not controlling of one’s senses is the way to adversity and danger.

Conquering them is the way to prosperity. Take whichever path you wish.

 

बह्वाशी अल्पसन्तुष्टः सुनिद्रः शीघ्रचेतनः ।

प्रभुभक्तिश्च शौर्यञ्च मन्तव्याः षट् शुनो गुणाः ॥ 878

 

Bahvashi alpasantushtah sunidrah shighrachetanah ।

Prabhubhaktishcha shauryancha mantavyah shat shuno gunah ॥

 

Has many desires, is satiated with little, sleeps deeply, quick to alert,

worships his master, is brave- these six qualities of a dog are admirable.

 

का ते कान्ता कस्ते पुत्रः संसारऽयमतीव विचित्रः ।

कस्यं त्वं कः कुत आयातः तत्त्वं चिन्तय तदिह भ्रातः ॥ 879

 

Ka te kanta kaste putrah samsara ayamativa vichitrah ।ayam ।

Kasya tvam kah kuta ayatah tattvam chintaya tadiha bhratah ॥

 

Who is your wife? who is your son? This world is strange indeed.

To whom do you belong? Where do you came from? Brother! Do think of these things.

 

अशीमहि वयं भिक्षामशावसौ वसीमहि ।

शयीमहि महीपृष्टे कुर्वीमहि किमीश्वरैः ॥ 880

 

Ashimahi vayam bhikshamashavasau vasimahi ।

Shayimahi mahiprushte kurvimahi kimishvaraih ॥

 

Let us eat the food we have begged, let the sky be our clothing,

Let the surface of the earth be our bed, what have we to do with the rich?

 

 संत एव सतां नित्यं आपदुद्धरणक्षमाः।

गजानां पङ्कमग्नानां गजा एव दुरन्धराः ॥ 871

 

Santa eva satam nityam apaduddharanakshamah ।

Gajanam pankamagnanam gaja eva durandharah ॥

 

Goodmen will save other goodmen in times of calamities.

An elephant stuck in mud can be pulled out by another elephant.

 

अंगणवेदी वसुधा कुल्या जलधिः स्थली च पातालम् ।

वाल्मीकः च सुमेरुः कृतप्रतिज्ञस्य धीरस्य ॥ 872

 

Anganavedi Vasudha kulya jaladhih sthali cha patalam ।

Valimikah cha sumeruh krutaprajnasya dhirasya ॥

 

For a brave person with conviction, the world is like a small ground, swollen

rivers like canals, hell below like a park, Mt. Meru like an anthill

 

अध्रुवेण शरीरेण प्रतिक्षण विनाशिना ।

ध्रुवं यो नार्जयेत् धर्मं स शोच्यः मूढचेतनः ॥ 873

 

Adhruvena sharirena pratikshana vinashina ।

Dhruvam yo narjayet dharmam sa shochyah mudhachetanah ॥

 

The ignorant person who does not accumulate the permanent

merits of dharma compared to the impermanent body is deplorable.

 

धन्या पतिव्रता नारी मान्या पूज्या विशेषतः ।

पावनी सर्वलोकानां सर्वपापैधनाशिनी ॥ 874

 

Blessed is the woman faithful to her husband. She deserves special respect and honour. She sanctifies all the worlds and removes all the sins.

 

आयुष: क्षण एकोपि सर्वरत्नैर्न लभ्यते ।
नायते तद् वॄथा येन प्रमाद: सुमहानहो ॥ 875

Ayushah kshana ekopi sarvaratnairna labhyate ।

Nayate tad vruthaa yena pramadah sumahanaho ॥

 

A moment of time that has lapsed cannot be brought back even

with all jewels. Why then do people keep on wasting their time?

 

 मरणान्ताश्च प्रणयाः कोपास्तत्क्षणभङ्गुराः ।

परित्यागाश्च निस्सङ्गा भवन्ति हि महात्मनाम् ॥ 866

 

Maranantashcha pranayah kopastatkshanabhangurah l

Parityagashcha nissanga bhavanti hi mahatmanam ll

 

Love till the last breath, anger lasting only for a second, giving

without expecting anything in return are qualities in great men.

 

तिर्यगूर्ध्वमधः पूर्णं सच्चिदानन्दमद्वयम् ।
अनन्तं नित्यमेकं यत् तद्ब्रह्मेत्यवधारयेत् ॥ 867

Tiryagurdhvamadhah purnam sachchidaanandamadvayam l
Anantam nityamekam yat tadbrahmetyavadharayet ll

Realise that Brahman is Bliss which is Non–Dual, Infinite, Eternal,

which fills all – above, below and all that exists in-between.

 

मृत्युकाले यथा मर्त्यो विपरीतानि सेवते ।

मुमूर्षूणां हि सर्वेषां यत्यथ्यं तन्न शोभते ॥ 868

 

Mrutyukale yatha martyo viparitani sevate l

Mumurshunam hi sarvesham yatpathyam tatra shobhate ll

 

Just as at the time of death one chooses what is dangerous to one,

none who desires the end counts on that which will save him.

 

मृगा मृगैः संगमनुब्रजन्ति गावश्च गोभिस्तुरगस्तुरङ्गैः ।
मूर्खाश्च मूर्खैः सुधियः सुधीभिः समानशीलव्यसनेषु सख्यं ॥ 869

 

Mriga mrigaih sangamanubrajanti gavashcha gobhisturagasturangaih l
Murkhascha murkhaihh sudhiyah sudhibhih samanshilavyasaneshu sakhyam ll

 

Deers roam in the company of deers, cows with other cows, and horses with other horses. Foolish persons remain in the company of foolish persons and educated persons in the company of educated persons.

एतावज्जन्मसाफल्यं देहिनामिह देहिषु ।
प्राणैरर्थैर्धिया वाचा श्रेय एवाचरेत्सदा ॥ 870 

Etavat janma saphalyam dehinam iha deheshu ।
Pranaih arthaih dhiya vacha shreya evacharet sada ॥

There is only one way to be satisfied in life. Make use of

your life, wealth, wisdom and words to help others succeed.

 प्रत्यहं प्रत्यवेक्षेत नरश्चरितमात्मनः ।

किं नु मे पशुभिस्तुल्यं किं नु सत्पुरुषेरिति ॥ 861

 

Pratyaham pratyaveksheta narashcharitamatmanah l

Kim nu me pashubhistulyam kim nu satpurusheriti ll

 

One must regularly examine oneself and one’s soul.

Whether the soul is like that of a beast or like that of a noble person.

 

अहो साहजिकं प्रेम दूरादपि विराजते ।
चकोरनयनद्वन्द्वमाह्लादयति चन्द्रमाः ॥ 862

 

Aho sahajikaṃ prema duradapi virajate l
Cakoranayanadvandvamahladayati candramah ll

 

When love is natural, distance does not matter.

The moon and the Chakora bird enjoy watching each other. 

 

सर्वस्वनाशे सम्प्राप्ते प्राणानामपि संशये ।

अपि शत्रुं प्रणम्योच्चै रक्षेत् प्राणान् धनानि च ॥ 863

 

Sarvasvanashe samprapte prananamapi samshaye l

Api shatrum pranamyochchai rakshet pranan dhanani cha ll

 

When the possibility of losing everything and one’s life is in danger, one should

save one’s life and money even if one has to offer salutations to the enemy.

 

न प्रहृष्यति सम्माने नापमाने च कुप्यति ।

न क्रुद्धः परुषं ब्रूयादेतद्धि साधुलक्षणम् ॥ 864

 

Na prahrushyati sammane napamane cha kupyati l

Na kruddhah parusham bruyadeddhiddha sadhulakshanam ll

 

Not over happy when praised, not angry when insulted,

not furious with bad words, these are the signs of a gentleman.

 

मनो हि द्विविधं प्रोक्तं शुध्दं चाशुध्दमेव च ।

अशुध्दं कामसंकल्पं शुध्दं कामविवर्जितम् ॥ 865

 

Mano hi dvividham proktam shuddham chashuddhameva cha l

Ashuddham kamasankalpam shuddham kamavivarjitam ll

 

Mind is said to be of two types – pure and impure.

Impure mind is with binding desires and pure mind is without desires.
