अतिदानाद्बलिर्बद्धो ह्यतिमानात्सुयोधनः ।

विनष्टो रावणो लौल्यात् अति सर्वत्र वर्जयेत् ॥ 1161

 

Atidanadbalirbaddho hyatimanaatsuyodhanah l

Vinashto ravano laulyaat ati sarvatra varjayet ll 

 

Excessive generosity led to the capture of Bali.
Excessive pride led to the downfall of Suyodhana.
Excessive infatuation led to the destruction of Ravana.
Excess should be avoided in every aspect.

 

कोऽन्धो योऽकार्यरतः को बधिरो यो हितानि न श्रुणोति ।
को मूको यः काले प्रियाणि वक्तुं न जानाति ॥ 1162

Ko andho yo akaryaratah ko badhiro yo hitani na shrunoti l

Ko muko yah kale priyani vaktum na janati ll

 

He is blind who is busy doing wrong deeds. He is deaf who does not heed to good advice. He is dumb who does not speak pleasant words at right times.

तत्कर्म यन्न बन्धाय सा विद्या या विमुक्तये ।

आयासायापरं कर्म विद्यऽन्या शिल्पनैपुणम् 1163

 

Tatkarma yanna bandhaya sa vidya yā vimuktaye l

Ayasayāparam karma vidyanya shilpanaipunam ll

 

Karma is that which does not promote bondage, it is that knowledge

which liberates. All other actions only reflect skill and craftsmanship

 

सुलभाः पुरुषा राजन् सततं प्रियवादिनः ।
अप्रियस्य तु पथ्यस्य वक्ता श्रोता च दुर्लभः ॥ 1164

 

Sulabhah purusha rajan satatam priyavadinah l
Apriyasya tu pathyasya vakta shrota cha durlabhah
ll



Yesmen are easy to find, O King and they are always uttering sweet words.

Those who speak and listen to unsavoury truths are hard to find.

 

विषस्य विषयाणाञ्च दूरमत्यन्तमन्तरम्
उपभुक्तं विषं हन्ति विषयाः स्मरणादपि 1165

 

Vishasya vishayanancha duramatyantamantaram l
Upabhuktam visham hanti vishayah smaranadapi ll

 

The disparity between ‘visha’ and ‘vishaya’ is enormous. 

Visha kills on consumption; vishaya kills just by reminiscing.

 न भार्यया समं मित्रं न च धर्मो दयासमः ।

न स्वातन्त्र्यसमं सौख्यं गार्हस्थ्यान्नाश्रमो वरः ॥ 1156

 

Na bharyaya samam mitram na cha dharmo dayasamah

Na svatantryasamam saukhyam garhasthyatrashramo varah

 

There is no friend like a wife, no religion equal to compassion, no happiness

as in freedom; no stage of life as great as that of a householder.

 

विनयो रत्नमकुटं सच्छास्त्रं मणिकुण्डले।

त्यागश्च कङ्कणं येषां किं तेषां जडमण्डनैः ॥ 1157

 

Vinayo ratnamukutam sachchastram manikundale

Tyagashcha kankanam yesham kim tesham jadamandanaih

 

To one who has courtesy as a gem-studded crown, scriptural knowledge

as earrings, sacrifice as bangles, what use are dull jewels?

 

परीक्ष्य सत्कुलं विद्याम् शीलं शौर्यं सुरूपताम् ।
विधिर्ददाति निपुणः कन्यामिव दरिद्रताम् ॥ 1158

 

Parikshya satkulam vidyam shilam shauryam surupatam

Vidhirdadati nipunah kanyamive daridratam

 

Fate attributes poverty to a person after studying family background, knowledge, conduct, courage and appearence just like caring parents do seeking a groom for their daughter.

 

पूर्वजन्मकृतं कर्म तद् दैवमिति कथ्यते ।
तस्मात् पुरुषकारेण यत्नं कुर्यादतन्द्रितः 1159

 

Purvajanmakrutam karma tad daivamiti kathyate

Tasmaat purushakaarena yatnam kuryaad atandritah 

 

The fruits of action done in previous births are known as fate. 

Work hard and without let up in this birth to ensure a good future.

 

प्रभुतं कार्यमल्पं वा यान्नरः कर्तुमिच्छति l
सर्वारम्भेण तत्कार्यं सिम्हादेकं प्रचक्षते ll 1160

 

Prabhutam karyamalpam va yannarah kartumichchhati l
Sarvarambhena tatkaryam simhadekam prachakshate ll 

 

Whether the task is significant or trivial, one should execute

it with total dedication from start to finish like a lion.

 अपारे काव्यसंसारे कविरेकः प्रजापतिः ।

यथास्मै रोचते विश्वं तथा वै परिवर्तते ॥ 1151

 

Apare kavyasamsare kavirekak prajapatih

Yathasmai rochate vishvam tatha hi parivartate

 

In the boundless world of poetry, Brahma is the only one poet.
He changes the universe as and when he thinks best.

 

 

घातयितुमेव नीचः परकार्यं वेति न प्रसाधयितुम् ।

पातयितुमस्ति शक्तिर्वायोः वृक्षं न चोन्नमितुम् ॥ 1152

 

Ghatayitumeva nichah parakaryam veti na prasadhayitum

Patayitumasti shaktivaryoh vruksham na chonnamitum

 

A wicked person only knows to destroy other’s work, not to help them.

Wind can uproot a tree, not to help it grow.

 

निरुत्साहस्य दीनस्य शोकपर्याकुलात्मनः ।

सर्वार्था व्यवसीदन्ति व्यसनं चाधिगच्छति ॥ 1153

 

Nirutsahasya dinasya shokaparyakulatmanah

Sarvartha vyavasidanti vyasanam chadhigachchati

 

The work of a person who works without enthusiasm, is feeble

and mournful, gets spoiled and leads him into calamity.

 

प्रलये भिन्नमर्यादा भवन्ति किल सागराः।

सागरा भेदमिच्छन्ति प्रलयेऽपिन साधवः ॥ 1154

 

Pralaye bhinnamaryada bhavanti kila sagarah

Sagara bhedamichchanti pralaye api na sadhavah

 

At the time of the great floods, oceans cross limits and seek to change.

But saintly men never face any limits even at the time of any holocaust.

 

जानीयात्प्रेषणेभृत्यान् बान्धवान्व्यसनाऽऽगमे ।

मित्रं याऽऽपत्तिकालेषु भार्या च विभवक्षये ॥ 1155

 

Janiyatpreshanebhrutyan bandhanvyasana agame

Mitram ya apttikaleshu bharya cha vibhavakshaye

 

A servant is utilised when carrying out an important task. Relations are remembered  in times of sorrow, a friend in times of distress and wife when money is destroyed

 द्वावम्भसि निष्टेव्यौ गले बद्ध्‌वा दृढां शिलाम् ।

धनवन्तम् अदातारम् दरिद्रं चातपस्विनम् 1146

 

Dvavambhasi nishtevyau gale baddhva druddham śilam

Dhanavantam adataram daridram chatapasvinam

 

Two kinds of people should be drowned in water, bound by a heavy stone to the neck.One who is rich but does not give charity and one who is poor and does not work hard.

 

गिरौ कलापि गगने पयोधौ लक्ष्यान्तरेऽर्कश्च जलेषु पद्मम्‌ ।
इन्दुर्द्विलक्षे कुमुदस्य बन्धुर्यो यस्य हृद्यो न हि तस्य दूरः ॥ 1147

Girau kalapi gagane payodhau lakshyantare arkashcha jaleṣu padmam
indurdvilakshe kumudasya bandhuryo yasya hrudyo na hi tasya durah


The peacock is in the hills and the clouds in the sky, the sun is thousands of yojanas away and the lotus is in the water, the moon is two hundred thousand yojanas away from its friend, the lily, what is dear to one’s heart is not far away.

 

सम्प्राप्तो योऽतिथिः सायं सूर्योढे गृहमेधिनाम् ।
पूजया तस्य देवत्वं प्रयान्ति गृहमेधिनः ॥ 1148

Samprapto yo atithih sayam suryoddhe gruhamedhinam
Pujaya tasya devatvam prayanti gruhamedhinah


On receiving a guest during the evening, at the time of sunset,

the householder by worshipping such a guest attains godly status.

 

नारिकेलसमाकारा दृश्यन्ते हि सुहृज्जनाः ।
अन्ये बदरिकाकारा बहिरेव मनोहराः ॥ 1149

 

Narikelasamakara drushyate hi suhrujjanah

Anye badarikakara bahireva manoharah


Good-hearted people seem to be like coconuts hard on the outside soft within.

Others are like jujube fruits which are attractive only on the outside.

 

आतुरे व्यसने प्राप्ते दुर्भिक्षे शत्रुसङ्कटे ।
राजद्वारे श्मशाने च यस्तिष्ठति स बान्धवः ॥ 1150 

 

Ature vyasane prapte durbhikshe shatrusankate

Rajadvare smashane cha yastishtati sa bandhavah

 

When suffering from disease, addiction, when in times of famine, botheration of an enemy, at the doorstep of the king or in a graveyard whoever stands by you is a true kinsman.
