मण्डूकराविणं सर्पं गोमुखं च मृगादनम् ।

असुहृत्त्वेन मन्येत मनवन्तं च वैरिणाम् ॥ ३८१

Mandukaravinam sarpam gomukham cha mrugadanam ।

Asuhattvena manyeta manavantam cha vairinam ॥

A serpent giving out sound like a frog, a lion putting on the expression

of a cow and an enemy showing respect, one should take as not friendly

असत्यवचनाद् वैरबिषादाप्रत्ययादयः ।

प्रादुःषन्ति न के दोषाः कुपथ्याद् व्याधयो तथा ॥ ३८२

Asatyavachanad vairavishadapratyayadayah ।

Pradushanti na ke doshah kupathyad vyadhayo tatha ॥

Which evils, such as, enmity, sorrow, lack of faith, etc. do not arise from telling lies like diseases arising from having unwholesome food?

क्षणे तुष्टः क्षणे रुष्टस्तुष्टो रुष्टः क्षणे क्षणे ।

अव्यवस्थितचित्तस्य प्रसादोऽपि भयङ्करः॥ ३८३

kshaṇe tushtaḥ kshaṇe rushtastushto rushtaḥ kshaṇe kshaṇe ।
avyavasthitacittasya prasado api bhayankaraḥ ॥

One who is happy in one moment, angry in the next, every moment happy and angry, such a person is of unsettled temperament and even a favour from such a person is dangerous.

मृतो मृत्युर्जरा जीर्णा विपन्नाः किं विपत्तयः ।

व्याधयो व्याधिताः किं नु दृप्यन्ति यदमी जनाः ॥ ३८४

Mruto mrutyurjara jIrna vipannah kim vipattayah |

Vyadhayo vyadhitah kim nu drupyanti yadami janah ||

Is it because death has died, old age has gone old, calamities have met with calamities, diseases have suffered diseases that people get puffed up with pride?

अधः पश्यति किम्बाले तवकिम्पतितम् भुवि ।

रे रे मूढ नजानासि गतम् तारुण्यमौक्तिकम् ॥ ३८५

Adhah pashyati kimbale tavakimpatitam bhuvi ।

Re re mudha najanasi gatam tarunyamauktikam ॥

Why do you look down, O, girl, what have you dropped on the ground?

You, stupid girl, do not know that the pearl of youth is long gone.
