जन्मदुःखं जरादुःखं मृत्युदुःखं पुनः पुनः ।

संसार सागरे दुःखं तस्मात् जागृहि जागृहि ॥ 971

 

Janmadukham jaradukham mrutyudukham punah punah ।

Sansara sagare dukham tasmat jagruhi jagruhi ॥

 

In this worldly ocean, sorrows of birth, old age and death come again and again. Therefore, be awake and watchful! Be awake and watchful!

 

 

द्राक्षा म्लानमुखी जाता शर्करा चाश्मतां गता ।

सुभाषितरसं दृष्ट्वा सुधा भीता दिवंगता ॥ 972

 

Draksha mlanamulkhi jata sharkara chashmatam gata ।

Subhashita rasam drushtva sudha bhita divangata ॥

 

Seeing the essence of Subhashitas, grapes felt ashamed and wrinkled,

sugar turned to stone and nectar got scared and went away to heaven.

 

दुर्बलस्य बलम् राजा बालानां रोदनं बलम् ।

बलं मूर्खस्य मौनित्वं चोराणां अनृतं बलम् ॥ 973

 

Durbalsya balam raja balanam rodanam balam ।

Balam murkhsya maunitvam choranam anrutam balam ॥

 

Strength of weak people is the king, strength of children is weeping,

strength of the idiots is silence and strength of thieves is telling lies.

 

अमित्रं कुरुते मित्रं मित्रं द्वेष्टि हिनस्ति च ।

शुभं वेत्त्यशुभं पापं भद्रं दैवहतो नर: ॥ 974

 

Amitram kurute mitram mitram dveshti hinasti ca ।
Subham vettyashubham papam bhadram daivahato nara: ॥

A man accursed by fate regards his enemy as his friend, hates

and belittles his friend, regards good as evil and evil as good.

 

अधीत्येदं यथाशास्त्रं नरो जानाति सत्तम: ।

धर्मोपदेशविख्यातं कार्याकार्यं शुभाशुभम् ॥ 975

Adhītyedam yathashastram naro janati sattama: ।
Dharmopadeshavikhyatam karyakaryam shubhashubham ॥

He, who by the study of scriptures acquires knowledge of principles

of duty and understands what is good and what is bad, is most excellent.
