तस्माद्धर्मप्रधानेन भवितव्यं यतात्मना ।

तथा च सर्वभूतेषु वर्तितव्यं यथात्मनि ॥ 921

 

Tasmaddharmapradhanena bhavitavyam yatatmana ।

Tatha cha sarvabhuteshu vartitavyam yathatmani ॥

 

Deeds should be done with Dharma in the soul.

Treat all beings as you would like to be treated.

 

अदेशस्थो हि रिपुणा स्वल्पकेनापि हन्यते ।

ग्राहोऽल्पीयानपि जले गजेन्द्रमपि कर्षति ॥ 922

 

Adeshastho hi ripuṇa svalpakenapi hanyate ।
Graho alpīyanapi jale gajendramapi karshati ॥

 

One out of one’s place is vanquished even by an insignificant foe.

A small crocodile can drag even an elephant under water.

 

सर्वाः सम्पत्तयस्तस्य संतुष्टं यस्य मानसम् ।

उपानदूढपादस्य ननु चर्मास्तृतेव भूः ॥ 923

 

Sarvah sampattyasya santushtam yasya manasam ।

Upanaduddhapadasya nanu charmastruteva bhuh ॥

 

For one with a contented mind, all riches are his. To one wearing

shoes on his feet, the whole earth seems covered with leather.

 

भद्रं भद्रं कृतं मौनं कोकिलैर्जलदागमे ।

दर्दूराः यत्र वक्तारः तत्र मौनं हि शोभते ॥ 924

Bhadram bhadram krutam maunam kokilairjaladagame ।

Dardurah yatra vaktarah tatra maunam hi shobhate ॥

 

At the onset of monsoon, the nightingale remains silent.

When there is cacophony from frogs, silence is better.

 

नास्ति विद्या समं चक्षू नास्ति सत्य समं तप: ।
नास्ति राग समं दु:खम् नास्ति त्याग समं सुखम् ॥ 925

Nasti vidya samam chakhshu nasti satya samam tapah ।

Nasti raga samam dukham nasti tyaga samam sukham ॥

 

There is no vieion equal to knowledge, no penance equal to truth.

There is no sorrow equal to desire, no happiness equal to sacrifice.

 अभिमानो धनंयेषां चिरजीवन्ति ते जनाः ।

अभिमानविहीनानां किं धनेन किमायुषा ॥ 916

abhimaano dhanam yeShaam chirajeevanti te janaah ।
abhimaanaviheenaanaam kim dhanena kimaayuShaa ॥

Those for whom self respect is wealth live longer. Without self-respect

what is the use of either wealth or longevity?

 

मृद्घट इव सुखभेद्यो दुःसन्धानश्च दुर्जनो भवति ।

सुजनस्तु कनकघट इव दुर्भेदः सुकरसन्धिश्च ॥ 917

 

Mudghata iva sukhabhedyo dusandhanashcha durjano bhavati ।

Sunastu kanakaghata iva durbhedah sukarasandhishcha ॥

 

Like a mud pot a wicked man is broken easily but reunited with difficulty whereas a good man is difficult to be broken but reunited easily like a gold pot.

 

संपूर्णकुंभो न करोति शब्दं अर्धोघटो घोषमुपैति नूनम् ।

विद्वान् कुलीनो न करोति गर्वं गुणैर्विहीना बहु जल्पयंति ॥ 918

 

Sampurnakumbho na karoti shabdam ardhoghato ghoshamupaiti nunam ।

Vidvan kulino na karoti garvam gunairvihina bahu jalpayanti ॥

 

A fully filled jug of water will not create noise, while a half-filled jug makes a lot of

noise. Educated people remain calm while people less educated keep on boasting.

 

अन्तःकरणतत्त्वस्य दम्पत्योः स्नेहसंश्रयात् ।

आनन्दग्रन्थिरेकोऽयमपत्यमिति कथ्यते ॥ 919

 

Antahkaranatattvasya dampatyoh snehasamshrayat ।

Anandagranthireko ayamapatyamiti kathyate ॥

 

Hearts and minds of husband and wife are are joined by the pleasant and

agreeable knot, the child, which is the common object of their affections.

 

ग्रहाणां चरितं स्वप्नो निमित्तान्युपवाचिकम् ।

फलन्ति काकतालीयं तेभ्यः प्राज्ञा न बिभ्यति ॥ 920

 

Grahanam charitam svapno nimittanyupavachikam ।

Phalanti kakataliyam tebhyah prajna na bibhyate ॥

 

Movement of planets, dreams, omens depend on the Kaka-Taliya

principle. Wisemen who are aware are not scared of them.

 सर्वभूतदया शौचं शौचमिन्द्रियनिग्रहः ।

सत्यं शौचं मनःशौचं जलशौचं तु पञ्चमम् ॥ 911

 

Sarvabhutadaya shaucham shauchamindriyanigrahah ।

Satyam shaucham manahshaucham jalashaucham tu panchamam ॥

 

First purification is compassion towards all beings, second is control over senses,next is truth, fourth is cleanliness in the mind and washing with water is the fifth purification.

 

आपो वस्त्रं तिलास्तैलं गन्धो वा स यथा तथा ।

पुष्पाणामधिवासेन तथा संसर्गजा गुणाः ॥ 912

 

Apo vastram tilastailam gandho vas a yatha tatha ।

Pushpanamashivasen tatha samsargaja gunah ॥

 

Water, clothes, sesame seed oil smell the same as flowers when in contact with flowers, It is contact with good things that leads to good qualities.

 

अगुणकणो गुणराशिर् द्वयमपि दैवेन खलमुखे पतितम् ।

प्रसरति तैलमिवैक: सलिले घृतवज्जडत्वमेत्यन्य: ॥ 913

 

Agunakano guṇarashir dvayamapi daivena khalamukhe patitam ।
Prasarati tailamivaikah salile ghrutavajjadatvametyanyah ॥ 

 

Fate has placed two things in the mouth of the wicked - a bit of badness and a heap of goodness. Bad one spreads like a drop of oil in water and good one shrinks like ghee in water. 

 

किं चन्दनै सकर्पूरैस्तूहिनै: किंच शीतलै ।

सर्वे ते मित्रगात्रस्य कलां नाहरन्ति षोडशीम ॥ 914

 

Kim chandanai sakarpuraistuhinaih kimcha shitalai ।

sarve te mitragatrasya kalam naharanti shodashim ॥

 

Why talk about soothing substances like sandalwood, camphor or ice. They are not even one sixteenth in comparison to the soothing touch of a friend.

 

दशकूपसमा वापी दशवापीसमो ह्रदः ।

दशह्रदसमः पुत्रो दशपुत्रसमो द्रुमः ॥ 915

 

Dashakupasama vapi dashavapisamo hradah ।

Dashahradasamah putro dashaputrasamo drumah ॥

 

A pond equals ten wells, a reservoir equals ten ponds,

a son equals ten reservoirs and a tree equals ten sons.

 

 देवो रुष्टे गुरुस्त्राता गुरो रुष्टे न कश्चनः ।

गुरुस्त्राता गुरुस्त्राता गुरुस्त्राता न संशयः ॥ 906

 

Devo rushte gurustrata guro rushte na kashchanah ।

Gurustrata gurustrata gurustrata na samshayah ॥

If fortune fails one, Guru will help one. If Guru is lost no one will.

Guru is the protector without any doubt.

 

शून्यमपुत्रस्य गृहं चिरशून्यं नास्ति यस्य सन्मित्रम् ।

मूर्खस्य दिशः शून्याः सर्व शून्यं दरिद्रस्य ॥ 907

 

Shunyamaputrasya gruham chirashunyam nasti yasya sanmitram ।

Murkhasya dishah shunyah sarva shunyam daridrasya ॥

 

Empty is the house of one who has no son, forever empty of one who is friendless.All directions are empty for an idiot and everything is empty for one who is poor.

 

एकमेवाक्षरं यस्तु गुरुः शिष्यं प्रबोधयेत् ।

पृथिव्यां नास्ति तद्द्रव्यं यद्दत्वा चानृणी भवेत् ॥ 908

 

Ekamevaksharam yastu guruh shishyam prabodhayet ।

Pruthivyam nasti taddravyam yaddatva chanruni bhavet ॥

 

Even if there is one letter a Guru has taught his pupil, there is no

wealth in this world which by giving to Guru the pupil clears his debt.

 

अन्तर्वसति मार्जारी शुनी वा राजवेश्मनि ।

बहिर्बद्धोऽपि मातङ्गस् तत: किं लघुतां गत: ॥ 909

 

Antarvasati marjarī shuni va rajaveshmani ।
Bahirbaddho api matangas tatah kim laghutam gatah ॥

A female cat or a dog may reside inside a royal mansion.

Why would the elephant tied outside be considered inferior?

 

सर्वथा सुकरं मित्रं दुष्करं प्रतिपालनम् ।

अनित्यत्वात्तु चित्तानां प्रीतिरल्पेऽपि भिद्यते ॥ 910

 

Sarvatha sukaram mitram dushkaram pratipalanam ।

Anityatvattu chittanam pritiralpe api bhidyate ॥

 

Always easy to make friends but very difficult to keep up friendship.

With the mind being unsteady, love gets snapped for little reason.
