वनानि दहतो वह्नेः सखा भवति मारुतः ।

स एव दीपनाशाय कृशे कस्यास्ति सौहृदम् ॥ 941

 

Vanani dahato vahneh sakha bhavati marutah ।

Sa eva dipanashaya krusho kasyasti sauhrudam ॥

 

The wind becomes a helper of the fire that burns in the forest.

The same wind blows out a lamp. Where are the friends of the weak?

 

पारभन्तेऽरुपमेवाज्ञाः कामं व्यग्रा भवन्ति च ।

महारम्भाः कृतधियस्तिष्ठन्ति च निराकुलाः ॥ 942

 

Parabhante arupamevajnah kamam vyagra bhavanti cha ।

Maharambhah krutadhiyastishtthanti cha nirakulah ॥

 

Ignorant people start small tasks and are completely absorbed in them.

Determined people who undertake large tasks remain unperturbed.

 

दुर्जनेन समं सख्यं द्वेषं वापि न कारयेत् ।

उष्णो दहति चाङ्गारः शीतः कृष्णायते करम् ॥ 943

 

Durjanena samam sakhyam dvesham vapi na karayet ।

Ushno dahati changarah shitah krushnayate karam ॥

 

Do not make friendship or enmity with the wicked.

Coal when hot burns the hand and when cold blackens it.

 

लक्षणं मनसः ज्ञानस्य अभावः भाव एव वा ।

सति हि आत्म इन्द्रियार्थानां सन्निकर्षेण एव वर्तते ॥ 944

 

Lakshnam manasah jnanasya abhavah bhava eva va ।

Sati hi atma indriyarthanam sannikarshena eva vartate ॥

 

The quality of the mind is such that it produces knowledge or lack of it

in contact with the soul and sensory organs, behaving contrarily.

 

स्वल्पं स्वल्पमपि प्राज्ञैः कर्तव्यं सुकृतार्जनम् ।

पतद्भिर्बिन्दुभिर्जाता महानद्यः समुद्रगाः ॥ 945

 

Svalpam svalpamapi prajnaih kartavyam sukrutarjanam ।

Patadbhirbindubhirjata mahandyah samudragah ॥

 

Wisemen earn merit by actions done bit by bit. From falling

drops of water emerge great rivers that reach the oceans.

 विमृश्यकारिता नाम कार्यशोभाविधायिनी ।

अविमृस्यक्रिया नूनं कार्यमालिन्यकारणम् ॥ 936

 

Vimrushyakarita nama karyashobhavidhayate ।

Avimrushyakriya nunam karyamalinyakaranam ॥

 

Well thought out action brings glory to the work.

Ill thought out action spoils the work.

 

अपि निर्मुक्तभोगेन स्वान्त:स्थविषयेक्षया ।

असद्भावाय जायेत जिह्मगेन सहासिका ॥ 937

 

Api nirmuktabhogena svantahsthavishayekshaya ।
Asadbhavaya jayeta jihmagena sahasika ॥

A person who gives up enjoyment but has a craving in his heart should be considered to have evil disposition like a serpent which has cast off its skin but has poison in its fangs.

 

न धर्मशस्त्रं पठतीति कारणं न चापि वेदाध्ययने दुरात्मनः ।

स्वभाव एवत्र तथातिरिच्यते यथा प्रकृत्या मधुरं गवां पयः ॥ 938

 

Na dharmashastram patthatiti karanam na chapi vedadhyayane duratmanah ।

Svabhava evatra tathatirichyate yatha prakrutya madhuram gavam payah ॥

 

Not by reading dharmasastras nor by studying vedas does a wicked man

become what he is. It is only by nature like the natural sweetness of cow’s milk.

 

तदेयास्य परं मित्रं यत्र संक्रामति द्वयम् ।

दृष्टे सुखं च दुःखं च प्रतिच्छायेव दर्पणे ॥ 939

 

Tadeyasya param mitram yatra sankramati dvayam ।

Drushte sukham cha dukham praticchayeva darpane ॥

 

He is the real friend in whom both your happiness and

misery are seen as if reflected in a mirror.

 

अहो बत महत्कष्टं विपरीतमिदं जगत्।
येनापत्रपते साधुरसाधुस्तेन तुष्यति ॥ 940

Aho bata mahatkashtam vipareetamidam jagat ।

Yenapatrapate sadhurasadhustena tushyati ॥

 

Alas, it is indeed a contrary world. The deed which a virtuous person

Is  ashamed to do is performed happily by a wicked person.

 कृतिनोऽपि प्रतीक्षन्ते सहायं कार्यसिद्धये ।

चक्षुष्मानपि नालोकाद्विना वस्तूनि पश्यति ॥ 931

 

Krutino api pratikshyante sahayam karyasiddhaye ।

Chakshushmanapi nalokadvina vastuni pashyati ॥

 

Even clever people need help to get work done.

Even one with eyes cannot see if there is no light.

 

भये वा यदि वा हर्षे संप्राप्ते यो विमर्शयेत् ।

कृत्यं न करुते वेगान् न स सन्तापमाप्नुयात् ॥ 932

 

Bhaye va yadi va harshe samprapte yo vimarshayet ।

krutyam na karute na sa santapamapnuyat ॥

 

One who ponders over and does nothing in haste when

in fear or being happy does not have to be repentant.

 

स्वहस्तेनाचरेद्दानं परहस्तेन मर्दनम् ।

भार्याहस्तेन ताम्बूलं मातृहस्तेन भोजनम् ॥ 933

 

Svahastenachareddanam parahastena mardanam ।

Bharyahastena tambulam matruhastena bhojanam ॥

 

Give charity with your hand, get massage from some other hand,

Take tambulam from wife’s hand and food from mother’s hand.

 

पूर्वे वयसि तत्कुर्याद्येन वृद्धः सुखी भवेत् ।

यावज्जीवेत तत्कुर्याद्येन प्रेत्य सुखं वसेत् ॥ 934

 

Purve vayasi tatkuryadyena vruddhah sukhi bhavet ।

Yavajjiveta tatkuryadyena pretya sukham vaset ॥

 

One should do that by which one reaches old age happily. As long as

one lives one should do that by which one is happy even after death.

दर्शने स्पर्शणे वापि श्रवणे भाषणेऽपि वा ।
यत्र द्रवत्यन्तरङ्गं स स्नेह इति कथ्यते ॥ 935

Darshane sparshne va api shravane bhashanepi va ।

Yatra dravatyaramgam sa sneha iti kathyate ॥

If seeing or touching somebody hearing or speaking with

somebody touches your heart, then it is called friendliness.

 

 तृणानि भूमिरुदकं वाक् चतुर्थी च सूनृता ।

एतानि तु सतां गेहे नोच्छिद्यन्ते कदाचन ॥ 926

 

Trunani bhumirudakam vak Chaturthi cha sunruta ।

Etani tu satam gehe nocchidyante kadachana ॥

 

Mat, floor, water and fourthly sweet words are never

found wanting in houses of good people.

 

शरणं किं प्रपन्नानि विषवन्मारयन्ति वा ।
न त्यज्यन्ते न भुज्यन्ते कृपणेन धनानि यत् ॥ 927

Sharanam kim prapannaani vishavanmarayanti va ।
Na tyajyante na bhujyante krupanena dhanani yat ॥

A miser does not let go of his money, will not spend it, will not give it away in charity.

Has wealth gotten into him like poison and does not let go until he is dead?

 

एको देव: सर्वभूतेषु गूढ: सर्वव्यापी सर्वभूतान्तरात्मा ।

कर्माध्यक्ष: सर्वभूताधिवास: साक्षी चेता केवलो निर्गुणश्च ॥ 928

Eko devah sarvabhuteshu guddhah sarvavyapi sarvabhutatma ।

Karmadhyakshah sarvabhutadhivasah sakshi cheta kevalo nirgunashcha ॥

 

There is only one God hidden in all beings, omnipresent, in the souls of all,

overseer of all actions, witness to all happenings, aware and devoid of qualities.

 

सन्तोषामृततृप्तानां यत्सुखं शान्तचेतसाम् ।

कुतास्तद्धनलुब्धानामितश्चेतश्च धावताम् ॥ 929

 

Santoshamrutatruptanam shantachetasam ।

Kutastaddhanalubdhanamitashchetashcha dhavatam ॥

 

Where can those who are greedy for wealth run in search to get

the happiness of those who are fully content and with tranquil minds?  

 

सदृशं चेष्टते स्वस्याः प्रकृतेर्ज्ञानवानपि ।

प्रकृतिं यान्ति भूतानि निग्रहः किं करिष्यति ॥ 930

 

Sadrusham cheshtate svasyah prakruterjnanavanapi ।

Prakrutim yanti bhutani nigrahah kim karishyati ॥

 

Even the man of knowledge acts as per his own nature. Beings

follow nature. What can restraint against nature do?
