सदाचारेण सर्वेषाम् शुद्धं भवति मानसम् ।

निर्मलं च विशुद्धं च मानसं देवमन्दिरम्  ॥ 1226

Sadacharena sarvesham shuddham bhavati manasam ।
Nirmalam cha vishuddham cha manasam devamandiram ॥

By doing good deeds all the time with everyone, mind gets purified. Such a pure mind, devoid of any bad thoughts is a temple in itself.

 

अहिं  नृपं  च  शार्दूलं  वृद्धं  च  बालकं  तथा ।

परश्वानं  च  मूर्खं  च  सप्त  सुप्तान्न बोधयेत  ॥ 1227

 

Ahim nrupam cha shardulam vruddham cha balakam tatha ।
Parashvanam cha murkham cha sapta suptanna bodhayet ॥

Snake, king, tiger. aged person, child, dog belonging to someone else and

an idiot, all these seven if found asleep, should not be woken up.

 

सानन्दं सदनं सुताश्च सुधियः कान्ता प्रियभाषिणी सन्मित्रं सधनं स्वयोषिति रतिः चाज्ञापराः सेवकाः ।

आतिथ्यं शिवपूजनं प्रतिदिनं मिष्टान्नपानं गृहे साधोः सङ्गमुपासते हि सततं धन्यो गृहस्थाश्रमः ॥ 1228

 

Sanandam sadanam sutashcha sudhiyah kantaa priyabhashini

sanmitram sadhanam svayoshiti ratih chajnaparah sevakaah ।

Atithyam shivapujanam pratidinam mishtannapanam gruhe

sadhoh sangamupasate hi satatam dhanyo gruhasthaashramah ॥

 

Joyful home, intelligent children, wife speaking pleasing words, good friends, enough wealth, liking for one’s wife, dutiful servants, honored guests, daily worship of Shiva, wholesome food at home, attending to holy company – with all these a householder’s life is blessed indeed.

 

चातक धूमसमूहं दृष्ट्वा मा धाव वारिधरबुद्ध्या ।

इह हि भविष्यति भवतो नयनयुगादेव वारिणां पूरः ॥ 1229

 

Chataka dhumasamuham drushtva ma dhava varidharabudhdya ।

Iha hi bhavishyati bhavato nayanayugadeva varinaam purah ॥

 

Hey! Chataka, do not run after seeing clusters of smoke, thinking that they are

rain-bearing clouds. Not only will you not get water, but your eyes will start watering.

 

भिन्नस्वरमुखवर्णः शङ्कितदृष्टिः समुत्पतिततेजाः ।
भवति हि पापं कृत्वा स्वकर्मसन्त्रासितः पुरुषः ॥ १२3०

 

Bhinnasvaramukhavarnah shankitadrushtih samutpatitatejah ।
Bhavati hi papam krutva svakarmasantrasitah purushah ॥

 

A man having perpetrated an evil deed is alarmed at his own act, becomes one whose tone is altered, face changes colour, who looks suspicious and whose lustre is gone.

अर्थेभ्योऽपि हि वृद्धेभ्यः संवृत्तेभ्यस्तस्ततः ।

प्रवर्तन्ते क्रियाः सर्वाः पर्वतेभ्य इवापगाः ॥ 1221

 

Arthebhyo api hi vruddhebhyah samvruttebhyastastatah ।
Pravartante kriyah sarvah parvatebhya ivapagah ॥

 

When wealth is accumulated and when it keeps increasing abundantly,

all works get done effortlessly like rivers flowing down from mountains.

 

न सा विद्या न तद्दानं न तच्छिल्पं न सा कला ।

न तत्स्थैर्यं हि धनिनां याचकैर्यन्न गीयते ॥ 1222 

 

Na sa vidya na taddanam na tachchilpam na sa kala ।

Na tatsthairyam hi dhaninam yachakairyatra ॥

 

There is no education, no charity, no skill, no artistry, no resoluteness,

which has not been made the attribute of rich patrons being praised by their suppliants.

 

द्विगुणं त्रिगुणं वित्तं भाण्डक्रयविचक्षणाः ।
प्राप्नुवन्त्युद्यमाल्लोका दूरदेशान्तरं गताः ॥ 1223

Dvigunam trigunam vittam bhandakraya vicakshanah ।
Prapnuvantyudyamalloka duradeshantaram gatah ॥

 

People who go to foreign countries seem to acquire business

capabilities to sell goods at twice or thrice the price.

 

गोष्ठिककर्मनियुक्तः श्रेष्ठी चिन्तयति चेतसा हृष्टः ।
वसुधा वसुसंपूर्णा मयाद्य लब्धा किमन्येन ॥ 1224

Goshtikakarmaniyuktah shreshti chintayati chetasa hrushtah ।
Vasudha vasusampurna mayadya labdha kim anyena ॥

 

A man entrusted with a company's business delighted at heart thinks,

‘I have today obtained the whole earth full of wealth, why want anything else?

 

स्तोकेनोन्नतिमायाति स्तोकेनायात्यधोगतिम् ।

अहो सुसदृशी वृत्तिस्तुलाकोटेः खलस्य च ॥ 1225

 

Stokenonnatimayati stokenayatyadhogatim ।

Aho susadrushi vruttistulakoteh khalasya cha ॥

 

Wicked people are like the rod of a weighing machine which moves with slight

weight difference. They become happy or sad by the mere sign of prosperity or poverty. 

गच्छन् शरीरविच्छेदावपि भस्मावशेषताम् ।

कर्पूरः सौरभेणेव नरः ख्यात्यानुमीयते ॥ 1216

 

Gacchan shariravicchedavapi bhasmavasheshatam ।

Karpūraḥ saurabheṇeva narah khyatyanumiyate ॥

 

Even while the body is perishing and reaching the state of ashes,

a man is known by his good name, similar to camphor by its fragrance.

 

कर्मेन्द्रियाणि संयम्य य आस्ते मनसा स्मरन् ।
इन्द्रियार्थान्विमूढात्मा मिथ्याचारः स उच्यते ॥ 1217

 

Karmendriyani samyamya ya aste manasa smaran ।

Indriyarthanvimuddhatma mithyacharah sa uchyate ॥

 

One who restrains one’s organs of action but continues to

think of undesirable objects mentally is called a hypocrite.

 

उपायानां च सर्वेषामुपायः पण्यसंग्रहः ।
धनार्थं शस्यते ह्येकस्तदन्याः संशयात्मकाः ॥ 1218

 

Upayanam cha sarveshamupayah panyasangrahah ।
Dhanartham shasyate hyekastadanyah samshayatmakah ॥

 

Of all the means of acquiring wealth the storing up of merchandise is the

best for wealth production. Any other means is of a doubtful nature.

 

रथः शरीरं पुरुषस्य राजन् आत्मा नियन्तेन्द्रियाण्यस्य चाश्वाः I
तैरप्रमत्तः कुशली सदश्वैर्दान्तैः सुखं याति रथीव धीरः  ॥ 1219

 

Rathah shariram purushasya rajan atma niyantendriyanyasya chashvah ।

Tairapramattah kushali sadashvairdantaih sukham yati sthiva dhirah ॥

 

Oh king! The body is the chariot. Atma/ buddhi is the charioteer. The sense organs are its horses. The wise man, with senses under command, traverses happily in the world.

 

परिचितमागच्छन्तं ग्राहकमुत्कण्ठया विलोक्यासौ ।
हृष्यति तद्धनलब्धो यद्वत्पुत्रेण जातेन ॥ 1220

Parichitamagachchantam grahakam utkantthya vilokyasau ।
hrushyati taddhanalabdho yadvatputreṇa jatena ॥

 

A shopkeeper seeing a known customer coming, rejoices

the prospect of earning money as much a man does on the birth of a son. 

 निशानां च दिनानां च यथा ज्योतिः विभूषणम् ।

सतीनां च यतीनां च तथा शीलमखण्डितम् ॥ 1206 

Nishanam cha dinanam cha yatha jyotih vibhushanam ।

Satinam cha yatinam cha shilamakhanditam ॥ 

Just as brightness is the adornment of night and day,

unshakeable modesty is the adornment of wives and saints.

 

क्षन्तव्यो मन्दबुद्धीनाम् अपराधो मनीषिणा ।

न हि सर्वत्र पाण्डित्यं सुलभं पुरुषे क्वचित् ॥ 1207

 

Kshantavyo mandabuddhinam aparadho manishina ।

Na hi sarvatra pandityam sulabham purusha kvachit ॥

 

The follies of the dull-witted should be forgiven.

Erudition does not come easily to people everywhere.

 

धर्मो यशो नयो दाक्ष्यं मनोहारि सुभाषितम् ।
इत्यादि गुणरत्नानां संग्रही नावसीदती ॥ 1208

 

Dharmo yasho nayo dakshyam manohari subhashitam ।

Ityadi gunaratnanam samgrahi navasidati ॥

 

One who collects jewels such as dharma, fame, courtesy,

compassion and pleasing subhashitas will not face decline.

 

लभ्यते खलु पापीयान् नरो नु प्रियवागिह ।
अप्रियस्य हि पथ्यस्य वक्ता श्रोता च दुर्लभ ॥ 1209

Labhyate khalu papiyan naro nu priyavagiha ।

Apriyasya hi pathyasya vakta shrota cha durlabha ॥

It is easy to find wicked people in this world who please one with sweet words but difficult to come across people who speak & hear the bitter truth.

  

शुभं वा यदि वा पापं द्वेष्यं वा यदि वा प्रियम् ।
अपृष्टस्तस्य तद्ब्रूयाद्यस्य नेच्छेत् पराभवम् ॥ 1210 

Shubhaṁ va yadi va papam dveshyaṁ va yadi va priyam ।
Aprushtastasya tadbruyadyasya nechchet parabhavam ॥

Be it good or bad, pleasant or hateful. well -wishers should be

truthful to the the person whose downfall is not wished.
