प्रयत्ने समके केचिदेव स्युः फलभागिनः ।

क्षीरोदमथनाद्देवैरमृतं प्राप्ति नासुरैः ॥ ४१

Prayatne samake kechideva syuh phalabhaginah
Kshirodamathanaddevairamrutam prapti nasuraih

When many people put in equal efforts, only a few reap the benefits.
In the churning of the ocean, only gods got the nectar and not the demons.

शुभं वाप्यशुभं कर्म फलकालमपेक्षते ।

शरदैव फलात्याशु शालिर्न सुरभौ क्वचित् ॥

Shubham vapyashubham karma phalakalamapekshate
Sharadaiva phalatyashu shalirna surabhau kvachit

Results of auspicious or inauspicious work depend on the right time.
Paddy grows well in autumn and not in spring when flowers bloom.

परान्नं च परस्वं च परशय्याः परस्त्रियः ।

परवेश्मनि वासश्च शक्रस्यापि श्रियं हरेत् ॥

Parannam cha parasvam cha parashayyah parastriyah
Paraveshmani vasashcha shakrasyapi shriyam haret

Eating other’s food, being dependent, sleeping in other’s bed, associating with others’ women, living in other’s houses will bring down even a strong man like Indra.

कुलस्यार्थे त्यजेदेकं ग्रामस्यार्थे कुलं त्यजेत् ।

ग्रामं जनपदस्यार्थे आत्मार्थे पृथिवीं त्यजेत् ॥ ४४

Kulasyartham tyajedekam gramasyartham kulam tyajet
gramam janapadasyartham atmartham pruthivi tyajet

To save the family, sacrifice one person, to save a village, sacrifice a family,
to save the state, sacrifice a village, to save the soul sacrifice the world.

अरक्षितारो हर्तारश्युल्कव्याजेन पार्थिवाः ।

हारिणो जनवित्तानां संप्राप्ते तु कलौ युगे ॥४५

Arakshitaro hartarashyulkavyajena parthivah
Harino janavittanam samprapte tu kalua yuge

In kali yuga, kings will not protect their subjects.
They will loot them on the pretext of collecting taxes.

अविदितपरमानन्दो वदति जनो विषयमेव रमणीयम् ।

तिलतैलमेव मृष्टं येन न दृष्टं घृतं क्वापि ॥

Aviditaparamanando vadati jano vishayameva smaraniyam
Tilatailameva mrushtam yena na drushtam ghrutam kvapi

Those who have not experienced supreme happiness will say only
material pleasures are enjoyable. Like saying that sesame oil is tastiest by people who have not tasted ghee.

लोकिकानां हि साधूनां अर्थं वागनुवर्तते ।

ऋषीणां पुनरादयानां  वाचं अर्थोनुधावती ॥

Lokikanam hi sadhunam artham vaganuvartate
Rishinam punaradayanam vacham arthonudhavati

For average ordinary individuals, meaning closely follows the word associated.
For sages and thinkers, meaning precedes the associated word.

आपद्युन्मार्गगमने कार्यकालात्ययेषु च ।

अपृष्टेनापि वक्तव्यं भृत्येन हितमिच्छता ॥

Apadyunmargagamane karyakalatyeshu cha
Aprushtenapi vaktavyam bhrutyena hitamicchata

When the master is going down a dangerous path or not doing pending work,
a loyal servant must speak out even without being asked.

अग्नौ दग्धं जले मग्नं हृतं तस्करपार्थिवैः ।

तत्सर्वं दानमित्याहुर्यदि क्लैब्यं न भाषते ॥

Agnau dagdham jale magnam hatam taskaraparthivaih
Tatsarvam danamityahuryadi klaivyam na bhashate

Burnt in a fire, drowned in water, stolen, confiscated by the king,
material losses, if treated as to charity will not cause grief.

यस्मिन् देशे न संन्मानो न मित्राणि न बांधवाः ।

न च विद्यागमः कश्चितं देशं परिवर्जयेत् ॥ ४०

Yasmin deshe na sanmano na mitrani na bandhavah
Na cha vidyagamah kashchitam desham parivrajet

The country where there is no respect, no friends, no relatives, no way to learn, such a country must be disregarded and given up.

अहो साहजिकं प्रेम दूरादपि विराजते ।

चकोरनयनद्वन्द्वमाह्लादयति चन्द्रमाः ॥

Aho sahajikam prema duradapi virajate
Chakoranayanadvandvamahladayati chandrama

Natural love flourishes even from a distance.
The Chakora bird and the moon take pleasure in eying each other.

प्राप्य चलनधिकारान् शत्रुषु मित्रेषु बंधुवर्गेषु ।

नापकृतं नोपकृतं न सत्कृतं किं कृतं तेन ॥

Prapya chalanadhikaran shatrushu mitreshu bandhuvargeshu
Napakrutam nopakrutam na satkrutam kim krutam tena

If one has power, usually temporary, use it against enemies, for friends and to help relatives. If it cannot be used for bad action against enemies, to help and for doing good what can it be used for?

सकृत् कंदुकपातेन पतत्यार्यः पतन्नपि ।

तथा पतति मूर्खास्तु मृत्पिण्डपतनं यथा ॥ ३३

Sakrut kandukapatena patatyaryah patannapi
Tatha patati murkhastu mrutpindapatanam yatha

When a virtuous person falls down, he bounces back as a ball does
When a fool falls down, he will be like a lump of mud falling.

सुमंत्रिते सुविक्रांते सुकृतौ सुविचारिते ।

प्रारंभे कृतबुद्धीनां सिद्धिरव्यभिचारिणी ॥

Sumantrite suvikrante sukrutau suvicharite
Prarambhe krytabuddhinam siddhiravyabhicharini

Well planned, thorough, well executed work done after consulting
Knowledgeable people is sure to succeed.

अभ्रच्छाया तृणाग्निश्च खले प्रीतिः स्थले जलम् ।

वेश्यासक्तिः कुमित्रं च षडेते बुद्बुदोपमाः ॥

Abhrachchaya trunagnishcha khale pritih sthale jalam
Veshyasaktih kumitram cha shadete budbudopamah

As transient as a bubble are these six things, shade of a cloud, fire in the grass,affection of a rogue, water spilled on the ground, attention of a prostitute and a bad friend

हस्ति स्थूलतरः स चांकुशवशः किं हस्तिमात्रोंऽकुश:

दीपे प्रज्वलिते प्रणश्यति तमः किं दीपमात्रं तमः ।

वज्रेणापि हताः पतन्ति गिरयः किं वज्रमात्रो गिरिः

तेजो यस्य विराजते स वलवान् स्थूलेषु कः प्रत्ययः ॥ २२

Hasti sthulatarah sa chankushavashah kim hastimatro ankushah
Deepe prajvalite pranashyati tamah kim deepamatram tamah
Vajrenapi hatah patanti girayah kim vajramatro girih
Tejo yasya virajate sa balavan sthuleshu kah pratyayah

An elephant is huge but is controlled by a hook. Is the hook the same size
As the elephant? A lamp dispels darkness, are the lamp and darkness same in size? Diamond tools can fell hills, are diamond and hills the same size? A person with brilliance Is a strong man, what has size to do with success?

सकृदपि दृष्ट्वा विबुधा जानन्ति सारतां तस्य ।
हस्ततुल्यापि निपुणाः पलप्रमाणं विजानन्ति ॥ २२

Sakrudapi drushtva vibudha jananti saratam tasya
Hastatulyapi nipunah palapramanam vijananti

Wise men can know the character of a person by meeting him only once.
Skilled traders can guess the weights of many items just by holding them
In their hands.

क्व शरीरमशेषाणां श्लेषादीनां महाचयः ।
क्व कान्तिशोभासौन्दर्यरमणियादयो गुणाः ॥ २२

Kva shariramasheshanam shleshadinam mahachayah
Kva kantishobhasaundaryaramaniyadayo gunah

On one side, we have the body full of impurities and imperfections.
On the other, we have attributes like brilliance, beauty, enchantment etc.
The two are worlds apart.

भारोऽविवेकनः शास्त्रं भारो ज्ञानं च रागिणः ।
अशान्तस्य मनो भारः भारोऽनात्मविदो वपुः ॥ २२

Bharo avivekanah shastram bharo jnanam cha raginah
Ashantasya mano bharah bharo anatmavido vapuh

An idiot finds scriptures heavy, a pleasure seeker finds knowledge heavy,
A restless man finds his mind heavy, a man who does not know his soul finds his body heavy.

आत्मा जेयः सदा राज्ञा ततो जेयाश्च शत्रवः ।
अजितात्मा नरपतिर्विजयेत कथं रिपून् ॥

Atma jeyah sada rajna tato jeyashcha shatravah
Ajitatma narapatirvijayeta katham ripun

O king, one must win over senses, only then can one win over enemies.
How can a king who cannot master his senses win over the enemy?

निन्दन्तु नीतिनिपुणा यदि वा स्तुवन्तु लक्ष्मीः समाविशतु गच्छतु वा यथेष्टम् ।

अद्यैव वा मरणमस्तु युगान्तरे वा न्याय्यात्पथः प्रविचलन्ति पादं न धीराः ॥ ११

Nindantu nitinipuna yadi va stavantu Lakshmi samavishatu gachchatu va yatheshtam
Adyaiva va maranamastu yugantare va nyayyatpathah pravichalanti padam dhIrah

Let philosophers praise or criticize them, let Lakshmi the Goddess of wealth or go away, let death come today or after a Yuga, great men never move away from the path of justice.

तृणादपि लघुस्तूलस्तूलादपि च याचकः ।

वायुना किं न नीतोऽसौ मामयं प्रार्थयेदिति ॥

Trunadapi laghustulastuladapi cha yachakah
Vayuna kim nan Ito asau mamayam prarthayediti

Lighter than grass is air, a beggar is inferior even to air. When air is asked why it does not carry away the beggar, the answer is ‘He will beg from me too’

आर्ता देवान् नमस्यन्ति तपः कुर्वन्ति रोगिणः ।

निर्धनाः दानमिच्छन्ति वृद्धा नारी पतिव्रता ॥

Arta devan namsyanti tapah kurvanti roginah
Nirdhanah danamichchanti vruddha nari pativrata

Those in distress become pious and pray God, sick people do penance,
Those with no money want to do charity, old ladies pose as those with character.

ध्यायतो विषयान् पुंसः संगस्तेषूपजायते ।

संगात् संजायते कामः कामात् क्रोधोऽभिजायते ॥ १४

Dhyayato vishayan pumsah sangasteshupajayate
Sangat sanjayate kamah kamat krodho abhijayate

Contemplating objects of the senses, one develops attachment.
From attachment comes lust and lust leads to anger.

न वा अरे मैत्रेयि पत्युः कामाय पतिः प्रियो भवति ।

आत्मानस्तु कामाय पतिः प्रियो भवति ॥ १५

Na va are maitreyi patyuh kamaya patih priyo bhavati
Atmanastu kamaya patih priyo bhavati

O Maitreyi, a man does not become dear to his wife because he is a husband.
He becomes dear to her because of the nature of his soul.

लुब्धमर्थेन गृह्णियात् क्रुद्धमञ्जलिकर्मणा ।

मूर्खं छन्दानुवृत्त्या च तत्वार्थेन च पण्डितम् ॥

Lubdhamarthena gruhniyat kruddhamanjalikarmana
Murkham chandanuvrutya cha tatvarthena cha panditam

Gain the attention of a greedy person by using money, an angry person by soothing words, an idiot by acting obedient and a learned one by explaining the gist of the matter.

योजनानां सहस्रं तु शनैर्गच्छेत् पिपीलिका ।

आगच्छन् वैनतेयोपि पदमेकं न गच्छति ॥ १७

Yojananam sahasram tu shanairgacchet pipilika
Agacchan vainateyoi padamekam na gacchati

Even an ant can cover thousand miles by marching steadily ahead.
But the unwilling eagle will not move even one step.

गुणेषु क्रियतां यत्नः किमातोपैः प्रयोजनम् ।

विक्रियन्ते न घण्टाभिः गावः क्षीरविवर्जिताः ॥ १८

Guneshu kriyatam yatnah kimatopaih prayojanam
Vikriyante na ghantabhih gavah kshiravarjitah

Let qualities guide your efforts, what is the use of making noise?
A cow which cannot yield milk cannot be sold by the sound of its bells.

वयमिह परितुष्टा वल्कलैस्त्वं दुकूलैः सम इह परितोषो निर्विशेषो विशेषः ।

स तु भवति दरिद्रो यस्य तुष्णा विशाला मनसि च परितुष्टे कोऽर्थवान् को दरिद्रः ॥ १९

Vayamiha paritushta valkalaistvam dukulaih
Sama iha paritosho nirvishesho visheshah
Sa tu bhavati daridro yasya tushna vishala
Manasi cha paritushte ko arthavan ko daridrah

We, yogis in garments made of bark are as content as you, king are in your finery.One with unsatisfied and unbridled desires feels poor. When there is contented mind, who is rich and who is poor?

पत्र नैव यदा करीरविटपे दोषो वसन्तस्य किम्

नोलूकोऽप्यवलोकते यदि दिवा सूर्यस्य किम् दूषणम् ।

धार नैव पतन्ति चातकमुखे मेघस्य किं दूषणम्

यत् पूर्व विधिना ललाटलिखितं तन्मार्जितुं कः क्षमः ॥ २२

Patra naiva yada kariravitape dosho vasantasya kim
Noluko apyavalokate yadi diva suryasya kim dushanam
Dhara naiva patanti chatakamukhe meghasya kim dushanam
Yat purvam vidhina lalatalikhitam tanmarjitum kah kshamah

If the leafless Karira tree in the desert does not blossom,
How is it the fault of spring? If the owl cannot see the light, why blame the sun?
If the rain does not fall into the mouth of the Chataka bird, why blame the clouds? Who can change the fate written on one’s forehead?

न तथा तप्यते विद्धः पुमान् बाणैः सुमर्मगैः ।

यथा तुदन्ति मर्मस्था ह्यसतां पुरुषेषवः ॥ २२

Na tatha tapyate puman banaih sumarmagaih
Yatha tudanti mamastha hyasatam purusheshavah

One does not feel the pain in one’s body pierced by arrows as much as
Barb like harsh words spoken by wicked persons.

परित्यजेदर्थकामौ यौ स्यातां धर्मवर्जितौ ।

धर्मं चाप्यसुखोदकं लोकानिकृष्टमेव च ॥ २२२

Parityajedarthakamau yau syatam dharmavarjitau
Dharmam chapyasukhodakam lokanikrushtameva cha

Give up acquiring wealth and fulfilling desires if they are not as per dharma.
Reject even dharma if it causes unhappiness and is not approved by society.


आशा नाम मनुष्याणां काचिदाश्चर्यशृङ्खला ।

यया बद्धाः प्रधावन्ति मुक्तास्तिष्ठन्ति पङ्गुवत् ॥ २२

Asha nama manushyanam kachidashcharyashrunkhala
Yaya baddhah pradhavanti muktastishtanti panguvat

Desire for anything is a surprising chain binding man. Those bound by it run with It to accomplish desires. Those who are free from the chain of desires standstill like invalids.

दीपो नाश्यते ध्वांतं धनारोग्ये प्रयच्छति ।

क्ल्याणाय भवत्येव दीपर्ज्योतिर्नमोऽस्तुते ॥ २२

Deepo nashyate dhvantam dhanarogye prayachchanti
Kalyanaya bhavatyeva dipajyotirnamostute

Lamp dispels darkness and helps bring wealth and health.
For being the beacon for the welfare of all, I salute you, the flame of light.

अभावावधयो भावा निधनावधि जीवितम् ।

अविवेकस्त्वनवधिर्येनायं जायते भ्रमः ॥ २२

Abhavadhayo bhava nidhanavadhi jivitam
Avivekastvanavadhiryenayam jayate bhramah

All materials come with a date by which they are destroyed.
Foolishness has no such date and creates illusions of eternity.
