Paryatya pruthivim sarvam sthanam pashyami tannahi
Yasminnavyapate bhrata janani janako api va

Having wandered all over the world, I could not find that place
where one could find a brother, mother or father.

Antargatamalo dushtastirthasnanashatairapi

Evil thoughts in the mind of a wicked person cannot be washed away even with a hundred baths in pilgrimage centres, just as liquor in a pot cannot be purified by heating it.

Na heedrusham samvananam trishu lokeshu vidyate
Daya maitri cha bhuteshu danam cha madhura cha vak

One cannot find better qualities in three worlds than these -
compassion, friendship, charity towards all and sweet words.

Pushpe gandham tile tailam kashte agnim payasighrutam
Ikshau gudam tatha dehe pashyatmanam vivekatah

Fragrance in flowers, oil in sesame seeds, fire in wood, ghee in milk,
jaggery in sugarcane are all qualities to perceive like wisdom in the human body.

Bharyaviyogah sujanapavadah runasya shesham krupanasya seva
Daridryakale priyadarshanam cha vinagnina pancha dahanti kayam

Separation from wife, censure by good people, remainder of debt, having to serve a miser, visitors during hardship are five things which burn one’s body without fire.

Nahyato dharmacharanam kinchidasti mahattaram
Yatha pitari shushrusha tasya va vachanakriya

There is no greater act of virtue than taking care of
one’s father and carrying out his instructions.

Papasya hi phalam dukham tad bhoktvyamihatmana
Tasmadatmavaghartham muddhah papam karishyati

The result of sin is sorrow which one’s soul has to suffer.
A fool would commit a sin to put his own self in danger.

Dravyajvaraturanam tu shantaye naushadhadayapi
Nahi vrushtishatenapi pashanadankurodayah

Those with fever of acquiring more and more wealth cannot be cured with medicines. Even with hundred rains a seed cannot sprout over stones.

Prathame narjita vidya dvitiye narjita dhanam
Trutiye narjitam punyam chaturte kim karishyasi

When in the first part of life you did not acquire education, in the second, money, in the third, merit(punyam), what can you acquire in the fourth?

Yasya nasti svayam prajna shastram tasya karoti kim
Lochanabhyam vihinasya darpanah kim karishyati

For a person without awareness what can scriptures teach?
For a person without eyesight what use is a mirror?

Krushito nasti durbhiksham japato nasti patakam
Maunatah kalaho nasti nasti jagarato bhayam

For one who grows food there is no famine, for one who prays there is no hell
For one who is silent there is no quarrel and for one who is awake there is no fear.

Panchagnayo  manushyena paricharyah prayatnatah
Pitamatagniratma cha gurushcha bharatarshabhah

There are five Agnis for a man to tender with care.
Father, mother, fire, one’s soul and teacher, O Prince!

Ashramastulaya sarvan dhrutanarhumanishinah
Ekatashcha trayo rajan gruhatashram ekatah

If the four stages of a person (Brahmacharya, Gruhastha, Vanaprastha & Sanyasa) are weighed in a scale, O King, Gruhasthashrama will be on one side with the next three on the other.

Manirluntthati padagre kachah shirasi dharyate
Krayavikraya velayam kachah kacho manirmanih

A gem gets stuck under the foot, a piece of glass is worn on the head.
At the time of buying and selling, glass is glass and a jewel is jewel.

Kuta agatya ghatate vighatya kva nu yati cha
Na lakshyate gatih samyagghanasya cha dhanasya cha

From where does it come and having come where does it go?
The movement is not seen clearly, either that of a cloud or that of money.

dehinosminyatha dehe kaumaram yauvanam jara
tatha dehantarapraptirdhIrastatra na muhyati

One sees one’s body go through stages like childhood, youth and old age and
then on to death and a new body. The brave one accepts this and does not grieve.

Janakashchopaneta ya yashcha vidyam prayachchati
Annadata bhayatrata panchaite pitarah smruta

One who gives birth, one who initiates, one who educates, one who provides food and one who protects from fear are the five considered akin to a father.

Loke sukham parajanaya hitopadeshah
Tadvatsamacharanameva parantu dukham

In this world, giving advice to others on being wise is
easy, but to follow one’s own advice is very difficult.

Eershi ghruni na santushtah krodhino nityashankitah
Parabhagyopajivi cha shadete nitya dukhitah

An envious person, an abusive person, a discontented person, an angry person, a suspicious person, one who is dependent on others: these six types will always be unhappy.

Anahutah pravishati aprushto bahu bhashate
Avishvaste vishvasati mudhacheta naradhamah

One who barges in without being invited, talks a lot without being
asked, trusts untrustworthy people, is a foolish and lowly person.

Ekavarnam yatha dugdham bhinnavarnasu dheneshu
Tathaiva dharmavaichitryam tattvamekam param smrutam

Just like milk from different cows is of the same colour,
The teaching of different religions is all the same.

Shruyatam dharmasarvasvam shrutva chaivavadharyatam
Atmanah pratikulani paresham na samacharet

Let us listen to what Dharma says and after listening, let us imbibe its essence.
Let us not insist on others following what goes against our own selves.

Sarvah sampattayastasya santushtam yasya manasam
Upanadguddhapadasya nanu charma avruteva bhuh

A person with a contented mind will be content with all sorts of wealth. With
shoes on his feet he will not wish for the whole earth to be covered with leather.

Teerthani deergadhvaparishramani bahuvyayani kratudambarani
Tapamsi muktva tanushoshanani himsavirame ramattam matirvah

To attain Moksha, going on a pilgrimage is long and arduous, performing yajnas is very expensive, doing penance is punishment to the body. Wisemen shun all kinds of violence.

Vidvaneva vijnanati vidvajjanaparishramam
Na hi vandhya vijnanati gurvim prasavavedanam

Only learned people can understand the difficulties of scholars.
A barren woman can not understand the troubles of a mother giving birth.
