Nahyato dharmacharanam kinchidasti mahattaram
Yatha pitari shushrusha tasya va vachanakriya

There is no greater act of virtue than taking care of
one’s father and carrying out his instructions.

Papasya hi phalam dukham tad bhoktvyamihatmana
Tasmadatmavaghartham muddhah papam karishyati

The result of sin is sorrow which one’s soul has to suffer.
A fool would commit a sin to put his own self in danger.

Dravyajvaraturanam tu shantaye naushadhadayapi
Nahi vrushtishatenapi pashanadankurodayah

Those with fever of acquiring more and more wealth cannot be cured with medicines. Even with hundred rains a seed cannot sprout over stones.

Prathame narjita vidya dvitiye narjita dhanam
Trutiye narjitam punyam chaturte kim karishyasi

When in the first part of life you did not acquire education, in the second, money, in the third, merit(punyam), what can you acquire in the fourth?

Yasya nasti svayam prajna shastram tasya karoti kim
Lochanabhyam vihinasya darpanah kim karishyati

For a person without awareness what can scriptures teach?
For a person without eyesight what use is a mirror?
