उपदेशं पठस्येव नैवार्थज्ञोऽसि तत्त्वतः ।
पाठमात्रा हि ये विप्रा द्विपदाः पशवो हि ते ॥ ५५१
Upadesham patthasyeva naivarthajno asi
tattvatah ।
Patthamatra hi ye vipra dvipadah
pashavo hi te ॥
Reading only the lesson without
understanding its essence.
Those Brahmins who just read are like
two legged animals.
कृपणो धनलोभेन स्वां भार्यां नाभिगच्छति ।
अस्यां यो जायते पुत्रः समे वित्तं हरेदिति ॥ ५५२
Krupano dhanalobhena svam bharyam
nabhigachchati ।
Asyam yo jayate putrah same vittam
harediti ॥
A miser with extreme greed for money
does not even maintain marital relations
with his wife because if a son is
born to them, he may squander all the accumulated wealth.
परपरिवादन्मूकाः परदारनिरिक्षणेषु जात्यन्धाः ।
ये पररहस्यबधिरास्ते प्रुरुषा देवतासदृशाः ॥ ५५३
Paraparivadanmukah
paradaraanirikshaneshu jatyndhah ।
Ye pararahsyabadhiraste purusha
devatasadrushah ॥
People who are dumb when it comes to
insulting others, born blind when looking at others’ wives, deaf when listening to
others’ secrets are equivalent to Gods.
यथा चतुर्भिः कनकं परीक्ष्यते निघर्षणच्छेदनतापताडनौः ।
तथा चतुर्भिः पुरुष परीक्ष्यते त्यागेन शीलेन गुणेन कर्मणा ॥ ५५४
Yatha
chaturbhih kanakam parikshyate nigharshanacchedanatapatadanau ।
Tatha chaturbhih
purusha parikshyate tyagena shilena gunena karmana ॥
Just as the four ways Gold is examined
by rubbing, cutting, heating and
beating, a person is examined by his
sacrifice, conduct, qualities and deeds.
दृष्टिपूतं न्यसेत्पादं वस्त्रपूतं जलं पिबेत् ।
सत्यपूतां वदेद्वाणीं मनःपूतं समाचरेत् ॥ ५५५
Drushtiputam nyasetpadam vastraputam
jalam pibet ।
Satyaputam vadedvanim manahputam
samacharet ॥
Take a step after seeing the ground,
drink water filtered with a cloth,
Utter words that are truthful and do
your deeds with a clear mind.
